I have a problem with my 2 week old American Deluxe. I went to play it last night, and couldn't get any sound from the middle pick up, or any combination that ran through the middle pick up. This is my first Fender, and I'm seriously disappointed. Luckily, the store I bought it from (Guitar Center) is good about standing behind their products. They are returning it, and sending me a new one. But, considering what I laid out for this guitar, its a serious disappointment. They also commented that this is not the first time they've seen this problem on these guitars. The way they built up this new set up with the S-1 switching system, I expected better. I guess I'm venting a little. But 2 weeks without my guitar. I think I'm going through withdrawls. Has anyone else had this problem with a new strat?

Hi, welcome to the Forum.

That is a very tiresome problem for you. Interesting that it developed, rather than being present from the start. Various possibilities: a likely one is a bad solder joint on the pickup, as Orvilleowner was discussing on another thread earlier today. Also, I don't know if you've seen the underside of the S1 switch, but there is a little printed circuit board there and some quite complicated wiring, and I guess there could be an issue in there too which just might not have been apparent during final Quality Control prior to the guitar leaving the factory.

I'm sure you are not the first person in history with such an issue. But I do believe it is relatively rare on a brand new instrument.

However, we all need to remember that electric guitars lie at a sort of crossover point between machine mass production and hand building, with all the variables that involves. There can always be glitches: Fender's QC has probably never been better in 60 years - unfortunately, one of those glitches happened to you.

Good grief, I sound like a PR for the company! Bide your time over the next couple of weeks by hanging out with us some on the Forum. Lots of nice people and tons of stuff to learn here!

Cheers - C

I had a DOA middle pickup on a new powerhouse strat from musician's friend. I returned that for another one, which had nicks all up and down the fingerboard. Another return. I got a lonestar strat instead which had a couple of really high frets. But luckily warranty covered that. Now I'm set.... and it was worth all the trouble.

Moral of the story... I really worry about Fender Quality Control. :?

well atleast they are getting you a new one.
i saw the same problem on a lite ash strat i was checking out, and told them about the problem.
after they fixed it, they said it was a bad solder.
anything electrical, has the potential of having bad solders due to human error.

I didn't know Brad hired Ceri and is flying him to the states. I'm sure he'll like his new job.

Anyway......I've had my American Deluxe Strat for about a year now, and it's still going strong. I love it and have no complaints. And there are a number of people in here that have made posts about their American Deluxe and they seem very happy with it. Like Ceri said, almost any products have some "lemons" out there. Unfortunately you ended up with one. The good part of this whole story is that you're getting an exchange for a new one without any arguments. Hopefully this next one will be great. Let us know how the next one performs.

:D :D Yes, Fender have already hired me as VP In Charge of Global Smartypants-ness. Or did I just dream that?

I like your mind, Syeklops...

Ah who needs the middle pickup anyway? :)

j/k

I am surprised to hear that about an Am. Dex. strat. That's why i wouldn't go so high up, because if there is something wrong with a guitar that has such value, it is a big let down, and it gives you a bad impression of the maker.
Hope your new one will be better.
