saddles could be worn..and may need filing?? tho ive never had this with my strats...but it has happened on my Gibson Les Paul..and SG!! or where the string comes up thru the hole just before the saddles may be sharp, could be creating a kink in the string(s)!!??

I dealt with that for a long time until I figured out that because I pound the strings harder than most people, I needed to put on a new set for every four hour show. Before that I was sometimes breaking two - four strings a night and getting real irritated over it. I came to realize it when I was asking myself why don't I break strings when they're brand new? Then I discovered that the Darco Funky's ( made by Martin) would tune up and stay in tune fresh out of the pack.

Stevie Ray Vaughan fitted Teflon tubes on his strings at the bridge to help prevent this!!! check out close up shots of his #1 Strat..or the custom shop ltd edition!!...could be a option if your a heavy handed player like he was!! 8)

A smidgin of graphic lubricant where the saddle first meets the string will lessen string wear there. Also, if your tremolo is set too far off the guitar body, you can be putting too much stress on the strings when pulling the whammy bar away from the body. Fender recommends 1/8th inches as the tremolo-to-body distance during a setup.

I used to break strings all the time. A proper setup by a pro and it all but went away.

Your nut could very well be the problem if you use your tremolo alot. The strings are probably not able to slide through the nut, so they have to give somewhere, which is at the bridge.

Put alittle pencil lead dust (graphite) in each nut slot and try that.

Hi, Thanks for all the advise. I will definitely try out your suggestions. I'll have to check out the SRV Strat. #1StratMan

2 suggestions:

Try sanding the saddles with a fine grade steel wool. What's causing the strings to break is more than likely a tiny metal burr that stock saddles will develop with time.

A more permanent solution is to replace your saddles with a graphite saddle like String Savers Saddles.

Good luck!
