Mike's observations are correct. In brief prior discussions have disclosed the following:
Standard factory issue is now generally 9's. They are considered generically to be the most playable for the general community. 10's are supplied on guitars which historically were supplied with them.

From there its your call. However, pay attention to the nut because you may require a recut or replacement depending on the string gauges you chose.

I have 2 strats set up with 9s which I like for most stuff. My oldest I set up with 10s for slide and blues also dropped some vintage noiseless pups in that one.

The beauty of the strat is that you can theoreticaly use any gauge, even custom gauges made from single strings (if your lucky enough to find a shop that sells em. All you have to do is balance the trem springs to the strings, and if need be adjust the nut slots. 9s or 10s are the norm, one of my strats has 11's. They just suit that guitar better.

zzdocs call to check the nut is important. If you go up in size from the (probably) factory .9's, you can get binding at the nut. I had to file the big E and A string grooves when I went to a .52 E string. I went to the heavier strings for better chordal tone on one of my strats.

It's totally a personal choice, just like pick choice. Use what you like as YOU are the one who has to play YOUR guitar. And if you're happy with whatever set you have chosen, don't concern yourself with any criticisms.

I've been using Ernie Ball Super Slinky .009 sets on all my Stratocasters since 1969. I'm sure this isn't nor ever was, 'vogue' but they have always worked just fine for me.

All preference.

Me? I play gigs and do recording sessions mostly, and play blues, rock, hard rock, metal-ish, modern rock, grunge, pop, and some jazz. I use D'Addario 10's. Solid, good tone, and last me a long time.

- Ernie Balls: good tone
- GHS Boomers: love them but they don't last for me
- Dean Markley's: junk to me, bad tone, break easily
- DR: overpriced junk that I snap in a few hours of playing
- Fender: good and solid, but tone is just OK

Just one guy's opinion, but that's what you asked for..

I used to use Ernie Ball Slinky's for a while and they are great, but they have taken a back seat to D'Addario XL's, which to me have a sweeter tone, longer life, and less breakage. Also the way they seal them guaranteeing freshness is a big plus. I tried Fenders for a short time, and was dissappointed - second rate to the slinkys and D'Addario's and one pack even had strings with rust when I first opened them.

As far as gauges goes, I prefer thick strings on the low strings and lighter strings on the top end so I can bend into the stratosphere when I want to. For this I use D'Addario XL Light Top/Heavy Bottom (.010 - .052). This way I can get the chordal chunk on my strat & still be flexible on my leads with skinnier strings on top.

i use diaddario 11's on my frankenstrat, fender 10's on my hotrod and ernieball slinkytop heavy bottoms on my tele.
When i find some better ones i'll switch to them. As yet no-one elses strings suit my guitars more.

Hello Bennyr_99,

11's and 12's for me.
On my deluxe I'm using 12's flatwound.
I have the action a bit higher than
factory spec. Learn how to setup your
guitar and try many.
Best of luck.

Cheers.

They come with .009's I prefer .010's myself. Primarily I use D'Addario strings. They seem to sound better longer.

I use Ernie Ball's Super Slinky 9's on most of my guitars..... and just as a suggestion I also bought lately this little bottle of Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes.. they are string cleaners and man.... I used one wipe to clean all the strings on all of my 7 guitars and they played like new again! its pretty awesome .. so I recommend it too :D

I like using 12's. Give me a nice beefy tone and also give be more cotrol over my bends.

The beauty of string is it's so cheap that you can try many different kinds without going broke.

May I reccomend you try D'addario strings? They hold their tone much longer than regular string and are also musch cheaper than string with rust proofing such as Elixr's.
