I need help with a harmonic problem. I changed the pickguard on my mim strat and set the pickups to the specs that they list on this site and now have a 5th and 6th string harmonic vibration when I play an e note on the 2nd string, 5th fret. I have tried boyh lowering and raising but nothing seems to help. Any suggestions?

This happened after changing the pickguard?

Did you put on new strings too?

Welcome to the Forum.

How interesting - that's a new one on me.

Presumably the pickguard just happens to have an innate sympathetic frequency which is set going by a particular note. You find that all over the place with parts of cars or items round the house that vibrate at a certain pitch. Never heard of it with a pickguard before, though.

At a complete guess, you could try playing the note in question and simultaneously touching the pickguard and pickups in different places to try to find the exact location of the vibration. If it is a vibration between a pickup and the pickguard then reseating the pickup might help. You might need to sand of a thou' or two of the pickguard where contact is occuring.

Alternatively, if it really is the pickguard itself, then once you've found the spot try inserting a slip of paper between the 'guard and the body to dampen the vibration. Ideally, you should use acid free paper to prevent discoloration of the lacquer on the body. You can buy acid free paper by the sheet very cheaply (or a lot more expensively) from an art shop.

Be most interested to hear how you get on, if you care to come back to us on it.

Cheers - C

You could insert a small piece of double sided tape to the backside of the pickguard, and have it contact the body near the vibration. There would be no veiw of it from the outside, but it might mar the finish under the guard, if that is a concern.

this morning I tried the this without the amp live and the 5th and 6th would still vibrate. Just to clarify, this is a genuine Fender pickguard. I have not tried changing strings yet but I will. They are cheap enough. I will try to check and see if I can isolate it by touching around on the pickguard. I am out of town right now but will post what I can find out. This is very irritating. Thanks for the inputs...........
