Im thinking of buying a classic 50´s stratocaster, is the soft "v" neck that comes with it very different from the "c" ones??

Yeah, it feels fairly different. I now have guitars with both, and it is nice to switch back and forth between them.

But I'd probably stick with my modern C shaped necks if I could only have one.

Cheers - C

thanks for the answers, unfortunately im from portugal, and its not easy to find all sort of guitars and try them out, i´ve only played in "c" shaped necks...so it would be a "blind" purchase, since i cant find it anywhere. i would have to order it by the internet for example.

Where in Portugal are you, man? I was in Porto one time and I'm sure I remember well stocked music shops there? Good grief, the modern six string guitar more or less comes from the Iberian peninsula, after all!

Cheers - C

I can assure you the plans for the soft V on the 57 vintage hotrod were sent by God to Moses and are infact the eleventh comandment
"THY STRAT SHALT HAVE THE SOFT VEE, AND YOU WILL WORSHIP UNTO ME WITH A NEW SONG AND THOU RIFFS SHALL SOUND LIKE THE HEAVENLY CHOIR ON A FULL MEGA ACID-JAZZ JAM SESSION".

Its in the original DiVinci code honest :D

Seriously, its a realy good neck but i think the soft V shape changes from guitar to guitar. The soft v on my tele is nothing like the soft v on my 57 hotrod, even though their both called 'the soft V shape'.

Hmm, that's a shame.

On the plus side, that amazing bridge takes you across the river to all those very nice Port Wine cellars. Oh, mammy: I could hardly walk on my way back across the bridge. And not only because of all the bottles I had bought...

And may I recommend to anyone who's interested, try a bottle of white Port, chilled for an hour in the fridge. You won't be putting the cork back in that one!

Cheers (really, cheers) - C

Hard V's & soft V's don't work for me. They don't fit the shape I have my hand in when I play--my thumb ends up on the "point" of the V--even on a soft V--and it doesn't work for me.

But if you put your thumb up higher I can see how it would work.

So it's a C neck, or even a U neck for me.

[quote="nikininja"] well taken...as we've discussed...the '57 Hotrod neck is quite different and needs to be played. The question begs auditioning as I urged you months ago because your quest was similar.
