I recently purchased a new Candy Tangerine 2006 American Strat Deluxe. While staring at it I noticed a slight line across the body of it on the left hand side from top to bottom. It's almost like a thin indentation. Is there a seam along there or should I be worried that this thing is damaged? It is really slight on a perfect line and only viewable from a certain angle? Anyone else notice this or am I freaking crazy?

I have a 2006 American Series Stratocaster (3 color SB), and I noticed the same thing on it. All I can figure is that it's some imperfection in the clear coat over the finish.

Thank you for the reply. It cant be the clear-coat though because you cant feel it by touch. It's deeper down...must be a seam of some sorts?

I have a 2006 Deluxe with an amber finish, the one that shows through the wood body beneath. The solid body is not one big chunk of wood. It is three boards glued together, side-by-side. There are a number of reasons woodworkers, cabinetmakers, and so do this. The body is more resistant to warping and splitting, mainly. Plus, if the body was one-piece, you'd need a tree several hundred years old to get just the right piece of wood cut out for a fine instrument.

So the line you are seeing is a seam between two of the three boards that comprise the body. With the newer, more transparent colors, you will see some of the underlying woodgrain and "lines" defining joined boards. The heavy opaque paint on older solid body guitars hid this.

Thank you very much tied! Should I be worried that I see it on the front though?

My picture of the back was to better illustrate the construction, since the front had the pickguard covering most of one seam and part of the other. I would not be bothered by the appearance of the seam. Some colors today are more transparent than others. If you hold it close under a good light, you'll likely be able to see some of the tree ring grain pattern underneath, too.

I might add, when boards are joined like this, the grain pattern of the center board is opposite the grain patterns on the sandwiching boards. This is done for strength. It also emphasizes the joint through the paint in this case.

I think I might have the same thing on my 97 Hendrix strat if we're talking about the same spot. It's normal I think.

If you go to YouTube and search on "Fender factory tour", you'll see clips of the raw aged lumber on pallets waiting to be joined into a body blank. Large machines then cut out the basic shape, then route out the body for the electronics, eight bodies at a time, side-by-side.

Sample factory tour here ....
