I have been fighting GAS for a new Strat. What is the difference between the Am. Standard Alder, and the Am. Dlx. Standard "Select Alder"?

What makes it Select?

I think most American Standards are good grained, and planked (as in more than one piece to make the body). (my 98 mia is planked after I stripped the black paint off it, but you can't really see them the way I re-finished it)

I'm sure the Deluxe is a one, maybe two piece, so you don't see the plank lines, and the grain is probably much straighter, bookmatched, or more interesting looking, or just nicer.

Select Alder is a medium density hardwood that features a color range of light brown with reddish or peach hues.

Natural characteristics of Select Alder include small sound knots, modular rays, curly grain, pin holes, and mineral streaks.

That's the one. Just prettier bits of wood, basically.

Cheers - C
