i have big hands. i own a '78 tele that i had gotten used to over the last 20 years. 6 months ago i bought a standard MIM strat. it has a wider fretboard and a nice chunky feel. now i can't stop playing the strat and the tele has lain in it's case. i want to get another fender with a wide rosewood fretboard. without me going through every model, which one has the widest fretboard under $1000???

I researched necks last year - here is a selection of the largest at the nut. Prices are from MF - just google the name to find them at many online vendors. These lists are not complete - but a good jumping off place.

Telecasters

1.6875" (43 mm)

Fender American Telecaster - 9.5” Radius (241mm) - Modern C - $999.99
Maple or Rosewood - many colors

Fender Highway One™ Telecaster® (Upgrade) - 9.5” Radius (241mm) - Modern C - $749.99
Maple or Rosewood - many colors

Fender J5 Telecaster - 12” Radius (305mm) - ‘60s C - $899.99
Only available in Black with Rosewood - not to everyone's taste

Fender J5 Triple Tele Deluxe - 12” Radius (305mm) - ‘60s C - $899.99
Only available in Black with Rosewood - not to everyone's taste

Fender Nashville Power Telecaster - 9.5” Radius (241mm) - Modern C - $724.99 - $749.99
Only Rosewood - limited colors - 3 pickups

Fender Nashville Telecaster - 9.5” Radius (241mm) - Modern C - $599.99
Maple or Rosewood - limited colors - 3 pickups

The next nut size down is 1.650" (42 mm)

The list of models is almost endless - most of the Artist series, the American Vintage, and the various 60's and 70s Telecasters all have this size.

The 50s models have nuts of 1.625" (41.2 mm) in size.

Stratocaster

1.6875" (43 mm)

Fender Deluxe Players Stratocaster - 12” Radius (305 mm) - Modern C - $629.99
Maple or Rosewood - 4 colors

Fender Deluxe Power Stratocaster- 9.5” Radius (241 mm) - Modern C - $749.99
Rosewood only - 3 colors

Fender Deluxe Powerhouse Stratocaster- 9.5” Radius (241 mm) - Modern C - $799.99
Rosewood only - 5 colors

Fender Highway One Stratocaster - 9.5” Radius (241 mm) - Modern C - $749.99
Maple or Rosewood - many colors

Fender Highway One HSS Stratocaster - 9.5” Radius (241 mm) - Modern C - $749.99
Maple or Rosewood - many colors

Fender Standard HSS Stratocaster - 9.5” Radius (241 mm) - Modern C - $399.99 - $429.99
Maple or Rosewood - many colors

1.650" (42 mm)

Fender American Stratocaster - 9.5” Radius (241 mm) - Modern C - $999.99 - $1,099.99
Maple or Rosewood - 7 colors

Fender Standard Stratocaster - 9.5” Radius (241 mm) - Modern C - $399.99 - $429.99
Maple or Rosewood - many colors

Fender American HSS Stratocaster - 9.5” Radius (241 mm) - Modern C - $999.99 - $1,099.99
Maple or Rosewood - 4 colors

You have to handle them to know which is actually to your liking.

Hope this helps,

Gil 8)

Another option might be a compound radius, but these are not cheap.

Just by the way, I notice that Brian May's famous Red Special guitar, and the replicas of it his company now make, has a neck with a width of 47 mm at the nut, 51 mm at the 12th fret. The depth is 25 mm at the first fret (my recent MIA Strat is 21 mm) and 27 at the 12th fret.

Wow! That's not merely a baseball bat. That's a cricket bat!

Cheers - C
