Hi guys,

I was wondering about a few things. I am doing a project. I have a Squier Affinity series strat. Are the sizes in neck pockets different for a squier than a Fender? Can I get a neck that will fit a Fender and it will fit a Squier body also? Also, I know that the bodies are thinner on a squier, will this have anything to do with it, as I would like to have a neck with a classics V shape. One last question, can I put a classic bridge on a squier body? I am using this as a Clapton replica and I would like to make it as close as possible.

Thanks!

Hi Adam: it is an interesting question with a complicated answer. Fender often (but not always) make several things different about Squiers than the rest of the Fender world, precisely so that it is difficult to upgrade a Squier with higher quality parts. When you are ready to upgrade they want you to go buy a branded Fender instead.

You often find that MIM and MIA spec pickguards don't line up with the screw holes on a Squier body, even if there is the same number of holes. You can get around that by getting a pickguard custom made for you by WD Music (.com): their website explains how.

Another problem is that the spacing of the six pivot screws on the Squier bridge is often different than on Fenders and other aftermarket bridges. On regular Fender type bridges the spacing is 56 mm from center to center of the two outside screws. Check your Squier: if that measurement is more like 53 mm then you will not be able to simply drop in an upgrade bridge. And filling the holes and redrilling won't work either: the new holes will overlap the old ones and give you insecure screw seating. Almost as if it was designed with that in mind, huh?

I have an idea there are aftermarket bridges with 53 mm screw spacing - but since they are intended for Squiers they are likely not the highest quality. But check places like callahamguitars.com and wdmusic.com, just to be sure.

As far as necks are concerned: it so happens I have fitted (Fender licensed) Mighty Mite necks to both Fender and Squier bodies, so in my own experience the neck joint is standard enough to be interchangeable. But I've heard of others having problems in this area too. Tiny differences in dimensions, but just enough to cause difficulties.

Now, all of these problems are solvable with enough effort. But in the end it may just be easier to shop for a Mexican Strat and move on from there. Depends how much work you are up for...

Good luck - C

Also the Squier Affinity and the Squier Standard's are not the same body thickness so when you say that you no they are thinner you most likely are thinking of the Affinity which sells for 50.00 less on average then the Standard's.

Remember, all those guitars were culled from the same vintage.
