GAS happens to everyone, even to bassists, where it may be BAS.

Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. When it was first discovered, no one knows. Medical professionals (i.e. Dr. Seuss) have determined that this is due to the brain's perception of lack of gear. The Anterior cingulate cortex is probably responsible for this behavior. There are several treatments which have been known to work, but are not FDA approved (keep in mind that GAS can be treated, but nearly impossible is a cure. Once you have it, you have it. About 1 in every 20000 guitarists could actually cure him/herself):

Recognize the fact that you want more than you play, and you haven't been spending enough time with your 'gear,' and you need bonding; try to make fewer visits to the local shop

or

If you are absolutely certain you do not want to abstain from giving in to this syndrome, please use methods of protection like getting to know the instrument very well, and then make your purchase (preferably with zirconium 2 -dioxycarbonate, better know as money)

or

If you do decide to do option 2, but you do not have enough money, pay it over time, and a part of this option would be to consult a your local monetary specialist (accountant), but this is rarely necessary

Now that you have a better understanding of GAS, please understand the effects, and it can either help you get in touch with your music, or it can separate you from society and you will only care about gear (like me)

The medical staff (the gear specialists and technicians) want to make you fully aware of this disease.

Hendrixfan, I immediately prescribe you an emergency course of S.S.R.I.s - Selective Stratocaster Reuptake Inhibitors.

That should do it, wouldn't you think?

Cheers - C

Yes, most generally, Gear Acquisition Syndrome, is an affliction that strikes the wallet, bank account, and credit card balance.

When left unchecked, it can ruin relationships and fill closets and rooms with gear.

Hmmmm I don't have any guitars with Floyd Rose trems ...

Nice attempt Ceri. I like it. However, In this case one would use an uptake inhibitor. Reuptake inhibitors block replenishment of depleted stores. Those afflicted with GAS do not have that problem. They can't have too many guitars.

:D Hahaha! Hi Doc: I don't think my tiny joke was ever going to stand up to textual deconstruction...

And I'm on shaky ground here in any case. My uncle is a shrink in Boston: I remember the time he mentioned he was going to a conference on phsycopharmacology. To be fair to me, I was much younger at the time - but I honestly thought it meant a conference about phsycotic farmers. I asked interestedly whether it was the isolation of their jobs that lead to these sad problems? I can still remember with a blush the moment of recognition when I realised my uncle thought I was joking - and he realised I wasn't. Ouch!

Older and (slightly) wiser - C

Keep in mind that using too many inhibitors can produce Acquired Immune Guitaracquisition Syndrome, or AIGS. This is a dangerous disease and can actually destroy the love and appreciation of fine instruments.

It produces severe basket cases.

Can bring about the condition of having too much AIGS in one's basket.

There is no known cure for this.

I'm completely cured of GAS. I dug my jackson touring guitar out the weekend and punished my pesky raver neighbour with a 3 hour barage of slayer riffs. I then plugged my champ xd into the effects return of my jcm and played a couple of hours of country, jazz, blues and rock on my strats and tele.
I just dont need anymore gear.
Especialy a $20,000 blackie tribute. Atleast thats what i'm told.

Okay, so with an amassed total of 21 (guitars, basses; acoustic, electric, acoustic-electric), my G.A.S. has progressed to another level. If Fender don't make a Telecaster that has a Stratocaster bridge, P90 pickups and 5-way switching, I'll build one. If Fender don't make a 12-string Telecaster Deluxe, I'll build one. And I'm gonna build a lap steel guitar, somewhere along the way, but it'll have mostly Gibson parts (P90 pickup, stop tailpiece and tuners). I only mention the mostly Gibson parts lap steel 'cause I'm planning to wire it a la Fender Esquire.
