This could just be me being paranoid but it seems like the nut on my new Strat is cut wrong. The D and G strings look like they are too close to each other the, these are the best pics I could get I hope someone can let me know if they are supposed to be like that.

Very hard to say from the two blurry photos. If that middle one was in focus it would help because it looks a little as if the line of the G string changes direction quite a bit.

On the basis of the first pic the G string may indeed be a tad towards the D. The question is, how does it feel to play? If it is just a visual thing but your fingers don't notice it, then it doesn't matter.

If it bothers you and the guitar is within warranty then take it back and get it fixed. A nut swap on a rosewood 'board is really not a challenge to a halfway decent tech. Old nut out, new nut in, couple of adjustments with the nut files: bingo. Away you go.

That's what warranties are for.

Cheers - C

I always eye up the D string to the fretboard dots. That D string looks ok for the lowend of the neck. I would prefer a full fretboard view though. If anything it looks like the high E string is too far in and been compensated for by moving the B and G up.

Like Ceri says 'if the guitar plays ok is it worth worrying about'.

Well you can measure the distance between the center of the outside strings and take that number and divide by five and that will tell you what the spacing between strings should be on the nut

I agree that it looks off at the nut. But how does it play? If you don't notice it when you're playing, maybe it's not a big deal.

Nut work was one weak spot on MIM guitars (and on '70s Strats too, come to think of it), but it has gotten better lately.

I think you're right. To me the D slot is cut too far toward the G.

Yeah I got out the ruler and measured it and the D string is too far down. I called a tech and he said its covered under warranty so I'm happy about that.

It's really noticeable when I'm playing down toward the nut on the lower frets, after i get past about the 5th fret or so I cant tell. Despite the quality issues I've had this is quickly becoming my favorite guitar, It plays like butter.

Well I took the Strat to the service center and the tech confirmed that the D string is cut too close to the G string. The really cool thing is that he seen the Graphtech nut i had sitting in the case and said he could put it on the guitar as the replacement, so I'm getting a new graphite nut installed for free. Thanks to everyone for the input this is, without a doubt, the best (and busiest) guitar forum out there.

That sounds like a good deal to me. I am glad it worked out for you.
