Buying my first MIA strat this week. I'm gettin it in Candy Cola with Rosewood Fretboard. Any advice from you guys. And do any of you usually negotiate the price on yours. I'm buying local rather than GC or MF.

mppartiots, welcome and good luck on the purchase. I purchased an '08 MIA Am Std 3-tone sunburst with maple fb. I absolutely love it. I understand that the new ones are updated from previous years. Changes include new finish on the neck, copper-infused block, thinner undercoat finish and new bridge. I don't know how it compares to the '07s and before since I've never played those but it's a stellar guitar.

I negotiated the price on mine but I bought it new from my local GC. I'd definitely negotiate the price if you're purchasing from an individual but all things being equal I believe it's worth every bit of its price at the big box stores. Make sure you don't play it sight unseen, however. Play it to make sure it "speaks" to you.

Good luck with the purchase. You won't be sorry.

Always negociate. Especially if it is a smaller local store, because their prices seem to be higher than Guitar Center or some of the other dealers. I have not played an 08, but I have an 04 and an 07 and love them both. I hear good things about the 08's. Candy Cola would be my choice for an 08 also.

My negotiation almost always takes the form of endless researches on the internet before hand, so I already know I'm shopping where the price is right.

The appreciation of store owners when you don't try to haggle over a few bucks is a reward in itself. In addition to which I've sometimes been given extras like leather straps, gig bags and such simply in recognition of not trying to bargain like a 17 year old. And at a good shop being a recognised "nice" customer usually pays dividends in the end.

Google will show you the "best price": shop where that, or close, is offered and enjoy the dignity of not haggling. You'll feel swanky and still get a good deal.

Cheers - C

Thanks for all your inputs. I was wondering if you guys had to negotiate because the local store is actually selling it for the same price as GC and MF. So I wasn't sure if it were worth trying to negotiate.

If you cant find the deal you want in the cornershop go to another corner. A good guitar is worth traveling for. Ceri's point of not haggling a few quid is a good one. I'd hate to have to use a shop that felt i'd ripped them off. Fender and gibson both make exceptionaly hard demands on their stockists.

Mega Dittoe's to Ceri. I've been in retail sales now for over six years (cell phones).
Everyone wants a deal. I have a policy, if you ask for a deal you get none. Mark up on accesories is insane, and retailers would much rather give away a case they paid $25 for and mark up to $100 than lose their margin on the guitar.

Finally, I added $40.00 to upgrade from the included SKB molded case to a G&G tweed case, which the Strat looks drop dead stunning inside of!!

Is that really an upgrade? I thought the new cases were better than the G&G cases.

Thanks,
Erik

Also, the Sienna Sunburst can be had at the big box stores for $999 (same as other finishes), just ask and if you get a no, ask the manager.

Thanks guys. I can't wait to go get it. I had actually planned to buy it already but there was a problem with the paint job so they had to send it back. They said the replacement will be in Thursday or Friday.

I bought two this year. candy cola maple and sienna maple. Both are awsome. the sienna has a little more ring to it because of the thinner finish but you won't go wrong with the cola either. Enjoy it and welcome to the club.

Play it. Negotiate the price. If you like both, buy it.
