I'm getting an American Standard for my birthday, but I'm a bit sketchy about the maple neck. I've read that the maple fretboard has a glossy finish. I like the feel of wood, but I'd also like a maple fretboard. How does the neck feel? Does it feel like wood, or more like glass?

Iv'e got one and the neck is fantastic.Does'nt feel glossy to me.It's more a tinted finish than glossy feeling.Best bet is to play a bunch of them and see if it's what your after. 8)

If it's a choice between wood and glass, I would have to say NEITHER!

I have an American Standard '05 with a Maple neck. it feels like wood in your hand, IMO but it's very smooth. The finish seems a little thicker over the fretboard (maybe that's what you're concerned about) probably because of steel or nickel strings rubbing against the wood there though :P

As for the back of the neck FAASSSTT! Plays really beautifully and slides like a dream along your hand! Feels a little like the wood, not at all like a varnish or other wood finish (not like the gibsons that I've played) They have a habit of putting far too thick a finish on their necks IMO.

Anyway, I love my maple neck. I suggest that you play one before you buy (in case) :D Unlike anything I can describe though!

Sorry, I meant the maple fretboard. I've played '08 American Standards with Rosewood fretboards, and the neck feels amazing. Just worried about the glossy finish on the maple fretboards.

Readymade, the maple neck is fantastic. I just purchased an '08 MIA Am Std with maple fb and the gloss is very nice. It feels great and I think it looks incredible. I played a few rosewood boards that played great too but I'm partial to maple.
