I use both depending on the application.
I do use my humbucker equipped guitar more often.

I really prefer a combination of both worlds. I have installed in my MIA Strat Deluxe Players a SD Pearly Gates in bridge position. I like the versatility and all you can do with it.

write what u prefer.

When I bought my Stratocaster in 2001 I knew it was going to be the only good electric guitar I would have for a while. So it had to be versatile. That's why I got an HSS. Specifically, it is a "Hot Rodded American Fat Strat Texas Special." But I'm about to take delivery on a new Telecaster, a James Burton (Upgrade). That will free up the Stratocaster to return it to an SSS with new pickups, maybe Fralins.

When it's time to go for humbuckers I'll be looking for a Gibson Les Paul.

I think single coils and humbuckers each have their place.

Best of both worlds...one with 3 S, one with HSS.

Fender 60 Classic Player and Fender Lone Star ('96 MIA)

Cheers :D

I've been toying with that idea. I have a '07 HWY 1 Stratocaster SSS. Either the Pearly Gates or the Atomic Humbucker, I cannot decide. What kind of music do you play...do you think that pup would be good for old-school Thrash Metal and old-school Heavy Metal? Most of the bluesy stuff I play is with my neck or middle pups.

It sounds good as it is, I can only imagine a humbucker. :?:

Keep in mind that a humbucker, or even a single-coil size humbucker, when split, won't sound exactly like that single coil. I though that when I dropped a JB Jr in my bridge. It's close, but it's not the same. Versatile? Yes. Is is a perfect strat AND a humbucker? No.

The JB Jr on my main strat (98 MIA) is great, I love it. But there are times when it doesn't get close enough to a regular strat for gigs or recording when I find myself grabbing my "Lucy" - 94 candy apple red MIM strat with american pickups. For those times I need a pure strat sound.

Just an FYI

You cannot beat the sound of single coil pickups, out of phase and running through a cranked Fender tube amp. I have a bevy of guitars, some with humbuckers, most with single coils. I seem to migrate to either my Eric Johnson Strat or my Strat with Texas Specials. As someone else said, with the pedals available today, you can pretty much get any sound you want with single coils.

I have both. And it just depends on the mood I'm in, for what sound I want. I often just rotate my guitars for practice session, just to stay familiar with all of them.

I have a Strat that is HSS, and one that is SSS. One also has S-1 Switching that also gives out more types of sounds. For Humbuckers, I go to my '72 Thinline Tele, which has two humbuckers.

When I'm feeling lazy and don't feel like hooking up cables and amps, I go to my Ovation Legend.

Single coils through Fender amps, humbuckers through a Marshall.

Mostly singles on Strats, but I have an HSS Strat too, and get some good sounds from that one as well.

Absolutely. Some guitars do better with single coils while others with humbuckers. My favorite sound is my strat at the neck pu (vintage noiseless) with a medium tube amp overdrive. But I also love the mini-humbuckers in my Epiphone Elitest Sheraton, and think that a single coil in this guitar would ruin it.

I prefer single coil because they have a thinner sound, but I like the sound I get from a Jazzmaster's soapbars which are basically really huge single coil pickups. The best guitar for versatility in my opinion is a strat HSS.
