I'm not sure how much it matters these days. In 1970, I'd have said humbuckers. I was playing commercial rock back then and the single coil sound was far too "country" for my taste. But nowadays with much better pups, all kinds of amp options and stomp boxes, I can pretty much get any sound out of any guitar, so I play the one that feels right at the moment.

Example: I can plug my Hwy1 Tele into my Champ 12 and get a nice mellow jazz tone. Now, plug in my humbucker equipped Gibson Las Vegas special and I'm ready to twang my way into Hee Haw even though I haven't changed anything about the amp settings.

Humbuckers are, but I think single-coils are much better all-around. 8)

Yup Single Coils in my Strat and Humbuckers in my Gibson.
Honestly I use Dimarzio Area 58 pickups so they are not true single-coil, but they sound just like single-coils.
Most of the time I prefer single-coils, but for some things my Les Paul is way to go.

Horses for courses.

Mostly singles on Strats, but I have an HSS Strat too, and get some good sounds from that one as well.

Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. My preference is noiseless single coils.

I prefer humbuckers usually. However, I love my HWY 1 SSS the way it is. That has been the guitar I've been playing the most lately.

I'm a SSS Strat man, having formerly owned an LP Classic. While the LP sounded great, especially on hard rock and/or classic rock sounds, I am a single coil convert. I agree with many of the posts I've read on this board from some very knowledgeable members when they say you can get a very passable humbucker sound from single coils with the right amp settings but you probably can't get a passable single coil sound from humbuckers no matter what you do with your amp. YMMV.

I can't really ever get a hardcore metal sound out of single coils, but they sound more than excellent for good ol' 80's thrash! :D

I have guitars with both, but tend to love the gritty tone of single coils through a good tube amp, and find myself playing different things since those tones give me different ideas, and that's more along what I want to do - musically.

Good quality, quiet single coils though. Playing on a high end tube amp that is very quiet and carely give any hum with mid level or even higher gain with single coil pickups helps too.

Playing squier single coils through a Marshall MG is nothing like what I'm talking about though. Big difference between that and a custom strat through a Mesa Boogie Mark series or something similar.
