I personaly think pickups are just part of the whole instrument. A bit like cars, guitars leave the factory setup for optimum performance to economy in that price range. How many people change pickups but keep low grade stock wire and pots? or use a crackly bad lead from the guitar to the amp.
Same as you cant put a sports exhaust on a mini and expect it to be a dodge charger, and you'll notice the mpg drop.

Course you can gig a mexican strat, i did for years it never let me down. L   k at this bloke, never mind 3 chords and the truth, he's 3 strings and the blues

Really great!

Thanks for the link!

I've watched discussions (actually, they're more like dogfights) about quality components and some claim they can hear the diff between cloth covered and Teflon insulated wiring.

Well, until someone can turn their back and tell by the sound which is a MIM or a MIA, I'll remain skeptical about the justification for the much higher cost of most MIA Fender instruments.

Hey, if folks are proud and pleased because they "bought American" I'm happy for them. But some are a tad too anxious to justify their purchases with largely non existent benefits, as least as far as the human ear in concerned.

I have a beat-up old 90s MIM Strat I got for $150. Will put Texas Specials in someday, but it's a great guitar...have put new pickguard, pickup covers, knobs and switch tip on to begin to "reverse-relic" it a bit. Strung with 11s with the trem screwed right down on four springs, used for rythym only. Love it.

I'm not saying you cant hear the difference between anything, what i'm trying to get across is that guitars leave the factory as a whole. Ofcourse $200 pickups sound better than $50 ones but the difference is negligable unless your gonna go the whole hog. Fender guitars and most other manufacturers stuff leaves their factories ready to go onstage with. remember a guitar is more than the sum of its parts, theres the craftsmanship thats gone into it aswell as the love you will put into it over time. Get the MIM gig it and love it, as you grow with it mod it to suit your requirements. Thats the way i went with my squire series strat. Theres nothing on this earth to touch it for me, you'd probably think its garbage.
The whole tone thing has more to do with how you interact with a guitar than what guitar, amp and strings you use. Proved by our seasick friend in the previous link.

Excellent post and points worth repeating.

And the now deceased Jeff Healey gigged with a reworked Squier. I love my Squier and I'm tempted to sink more in it than it cost me. The main thing that stops me is, it sounds great when recording now. The only reason to upgrade it would be to install hotter pups.

That's right brutha! :D

So, we all agree, the worst Strat we ever played was fantastic!

I started my professional career with a pair of Jazzmasters in 1968 and with a Super Reverb, an Arbiter Fuzz Face and a VOX WAH I played Hendrix and Cream and Wilson Pickett, The Four Tops, The Rascals etc., as convincingly as any other club musician. And, even though I used Gibsons for years I don't ever recall not being able to "deliver the merchandise" with Fenders.

And now everything I play is best played on my Strats.

I also like the 70's Reissue Strat, Mexican or American. I love that big headstock.
