play the guitars and see if you what you can afford. mia are very nice if you can swing the cash. a good thing about mia is that if you don't like it you can sell it and not loose as much money.

Good point! I see MIA selling for closer to probable original price on places like Craigslist and EBay than MIM. Particularly on EBay, MIM can go for a modest amount less than original even if described as being mint. Case in point: I got my first Thinline - natural 72 reissue - for about $260 less (including shipping) than it was going for through online retailers like Sweetwater and Musician's Friend.

I'd have taken a similar loss on a 2 year old and mint MIM Strat had I sold it arms length. I sold it to a co-worker for less than I could have gotten, so I'm more referring to several offers I got from unrelated people.

Still, if you go out there and try, try, try as many as you can get your hands on, you'll get something you love to play. In that case, you may not need to worry about re-sale in the short run.

Both of my Strats are MIM, a Classic 50's and a Standard. I had a MIA for a few years and regrettably sold it, but for now I couldn't be happier with my Mexicans. Eventually though I would like to find the right MIA Strat and Tele, but I'm not going to rush it.

Play as many MIMs as you can get your hands on and then pick one that calls out to you. You could also do that for the MIAs but if you're on a tight budget there are some excellent MIMs out there.

I'm gonna ditto the idea of hotrodding the MIM. $300 MIM + $200 Texas Specials= a really great $500 strat. Try to find an 06 or newer or a Jimmy Vaughn sig series.

This is the best advice if you don't have around $1000 to drop on a MIA strat.
I think that the MIM have stock ceramic pickups, which I don't care for, so an upgrade to alnico magnet pups would be a good decision. Guitar Fetish would be a good route for a pickup upgrade on the cheap, or just scoring some USA strat pups from a good Ebay dealer. I just put the pups I pulled out of my HWY1 strat and dropped 'em in my MIM Strat - they aren't as bad as I originally thought.
However, I did like position 2 and 4 with the ceramics in this used MIM HSS I got recently!
Up to you! They are great guitars for gigging and modding. I really like the maple neck on mine. Well, always keep in mind, you get what you pay for. If you can get a good price on a used one, and upgrade slightly, you have a great gigging guitar on your hands. Brand new at around $400 is certainly reasonable for a well made instrument. MIM strats are fine guitars, but if you want the real deal, save for a MIA, or do like I did...just get a Highway 1 for around $650-700 - great instruments. Yeah, $1000 will get you an amazing strat. Is that what YOU need, though? You might be able to get the job done on a budget
Well, hope this helps. :D

1) I am pretty sure that the tuners are the same.
2) Ahhh, the "manufacturing quality" issue. This has been very contentious in the past. I -- for one -- have the opinion that the MIMs have a very high manufacturing quality that rivals the non-CS MIAs. This thread has already documented well the physical differences. But when it comes to the actual skill in creation, I see no noticable differences in "build quality" between MIA and MIM. I am not going to debate it, though. That is just my opinion.

I always wanted an American Strat but could never justify the money it would cost. The other day, when I was out for a sandwich, I popped into the local music shop in Glasgow (Scotland) and tried a Mexican Standard. It played great - what a neck, and sounded excellent. I just had to buy it! Got an excellent deal, and so what it it doesn't come with a hard case. I've hardly put it down in the last week.

Happy playing!

How are Mexican Strats? Like whats different between them and American ones? Can you gig with a Mexican Strat?
Regarding your question, "Can you gig with a Mexican Strat?"

Well, Andreas Kisser (SEPULTURA) uses three of them identical to mine. (HSS w/ FLOYD ROSE) and with the stock pups. He can afford any axes he likes so, what does that tell you? Because he's from Brazil he's not handicapped by the belief that MIMs are by virtue of their prices automatically inferior to MIAs.

And Henry Garza of Los Lonely Boys also plays MIMs. Again, he's Latino and wasn't raised with a "Buy American" mindset, and he can gig with MIMs or MIAs because he has both.

And, Nashville katz are now using MIMs and that is a fine testiment to their quality and sound. And, my Floyd Rose is a PING, it has a large brass block and is equal to or possibly better than the originals. Trust me, this axe rings with sustain.

Because I wanted a HSS pup config and a Floyd Rose I didn't really have a choice but a MIM (custom shop? Uh, can't afford that just to "buy American") and my 2005 sunburst w/ rosewood neck axe is one of the finest guitars I've owned in the past 40 years.

I could upgrade the pups if they didn't do what I need pups to do, but they do so I won't.

If you try a MIM Strat that you like, buy it. You won't ever have to apologize for that decision because they're in the hands of some fine players who didn't buy them solely for financial reasons.

I personaly think pickups are just part of the whole instrument. A bit like cars, guitars leave the factory setup for optimum performance to economy in that price range. How many people change pickups but keep low grade stock wire and pots? or use a crackly bad lead from the guitar to the amp.
Same as you cant put a sports exhaust on a mini and expect it to be a dodge charger, and you'll notice the mpg drop.

Course you can gig a mexican strat, i did for years it never let me down. L   k at this bloke, never mind 3 chords and the truth, he's 3 strings and the blues
