Welcome to the forum! That is too broad of question. MIM and MIA both have great guitars . If you could go play or find the models you like then you can narrow the question down to the specifications of both models. You also need to know what type of sound you are looking for and the type of music you'll be playing. See what I mean? Narrow your choices down and there are some knowledgeable posters here that can help you! :) 8)

Yes! They are great guitars! They have that Fender "Mexican Strat" sound, you know what I mean? They are a Fender guitar but in a "diffrent" way... :) 8)

I was thinking about Mexican ones because of price. I'm going for a Blues sound.

You can gig with any of them. The one thing you will notice between the MIM and the American is the neck 21 to 22 fret and the the rolled fingerboard on the American as well as the fret dressing work. It plays nicely. Playability is the main thing. Sound and tone can very so much because of the amp you use and the setting on it but the way it feels as you play will not change between amps.

yeah, gigging w/ stock pickups on an mim, is a 10-4.
i would suggest changing p/us for something that fits your playing style.
or if they are fine, then keep them.
ok. comparison between am std and mim std.
1st asthetics, imo, neck is less laquered, lighter in color. trussrod access is black plastic, vs on am is darker wood.
most mims have 21 frets, am most have 22(except vintage)
pots in american are (bridge)delta tone, w am std alnico v p/us.
on the mim the p/us are mim std strat pickups.
i believe both are 250 k.
tremolo block is different in shape, size, and density in both. per fender, am std has more sustainability.
that is basic asthetics, now sound.
in my honest opinion, (mim strat owners, dont kill me) am std has way better tone, handles gain better, sustain is awesome.
playability are the same for both i beleive.

I'm gonna ditto the idea of hotrodding the MIM. $300 MIM + $200 Texas Specials= a really great $500 strat. Try to find an 06 or newer or a Jimmy Vaughn sig series.

Here are the main areas where an MIA excels over its MIM counterpart:
- details in neck (also most MIAs will have a 22nd fret)
- pups
- tremelo (most MIA will have 2-point)
- colors & finishes
- case (MIA standards and above come with HSC; all other gets a gig bag)

How do these differences shake out for me personally?
a) Neck:
There is no question that the MIA will have more "richness and detail" to it compared to a MIM. Agreed. HOWEVER, the neck on my MIM is great. Personally, I like the "unfinished" aspect of it. It is very smooth and playable. Plays very fast . The fret work on my guitar is (at least) very good. I do miss having a 22nd fret more than I thought I would, though.
b) Pickups:
The ceramics on the MIM Standard are quite good. I kept mine for quite a while before eventually changing them out for a set of Tex Mex Alnico 5s.
c) Tremelo
The vintage is not as good as the 2-point for sure. But - personally - I would not be using it regardless. I can't remember the last time I put in my tremelo bar. Also, my MIM has endless gobs of sustain (as much as any MIA)
d) Colors
For me I wanted black, but I could see going MIA just for that beautiful "sienna sunburst" alone. There are some other tremendous MIA finishes, too.
e) Case
First thing I did was buy a HSC. But the new HSCs that come with the 2008+ MIAs are awesome. That tremendous case is worth being in the pro/cons list if buying new.

Right now not much! Thats the reason I was thinking about the MIM Strats. I think I would be pleased with one. Another thing I like about em is I feel their a good base to start with, for like Hot Roddin a guitar.

Dude you can gig with almost any guitar.

The MIM's are fine instruments (See GT's eloquent post)

Personally I'm an American made guy, but that's just because I'm stubborn :D

All this "offshore" stuff to save a buck is one of the reasons that American manufacturing jobs are few and far between.

There is nothing wrong with MIM strats - that's why Fender sells thousands of them....
