I thought groovetubes just got tubes off anyone and matched em. Ok they match em well but thats not a issue with pre-amp tubes is it, they dont act in tandem.

Syncronized, Tungsol on a Avt20 is gonna work great. If the AVT's are anything like their predecessor (the valvestate)then the valve is on the clean channel. Its what gives it that awesome breakup when you get past 7 on the volume. The tube works as part pre-amp part power section in that it comes into play with the volume control. (notice i said power section not power amp before i get hounded). It should help provide a bit more headroom and go into more towards meltdown at 10.

I dont know about the AVTs but the valvestates should of been single channel amps, that clean channel was a world beater.

Yet again impressed with your ears, Ninja.

Looking around for a practice amp to set against my Marshall TSL I first tried both ends of the MG range. Very disappointing. So then I picked up a three channel AVT with the idea of replicating the three channels on the Super Lead. Now I must say I think the clean channel on the big boy is very nice indeed, and to my great surprise the AVT's first channel does a pretty fine job of emulating it. In fact, it is definitely that amp's best feature. Not what you'd expect to be saying of any kind of Marshall.

The drive channels are OK for practicing - but don't make the mistake of A/B-ing them against the real thing!

A little surprised to hear the rest of what you were saying though, Niki, because I was under the impression you were deeply sceptical about the value of single pre-amp valves in hybrid amps...?

Cheers - C

I never played an AVT but I had a 100-watt 2x12 Valvestate combo for a few years. The mid-gain sounded pretty good on it, though a bit thin. Super thin at gig volumes too, could never cut it live. For jamming, practicing or some recording though, it wasn't too bad.

+3 on the Groove Tubes. I have a Peavey Classic 30 that I was unhappy with, and I was considering trading it for something else. The guy in the guitar shop convinced me to buy new tubes for it instead, so I replaced them all the Groove Tubes and I swear I walked out of that store with a brand new amp. Running my strat straight in with no effects is just the warmest, most amazing sound.
