i started wondering,
given in about 20 yrs, people would look for it, given the pickups, the bodies thin nitrocellulose finish.
it carries a certain appeal.
what do you guys think?

The fact that it is MIA will also definitely strengthen your argument.

The older ones will carry a bit of value, but if Fender discontinues the Highway One line then they're gonna shoot WAAAAAAY up.

i believe the ones previous to the upgrade(prior 2006) will probably carry the higher value, because they were the original ones, and by what ive heard and read, they were geared with more vintage/modern.
while the upgrade carry more modern sound.

i only speak for myself, the more i see the earlier hwy1s, the more i want one.

I would say you are right around 2028 it may be looked for. I just don't see any every day production guitars going up in value until they are many many many years old.

I own a Highway One Texas Tele and it's fantastic (yeah I know this is a Strat forum but it's the only Highway One I own). True it ain't quite as "purty" as the American Standards as far as finish goes but it sure does play nice.

I own a Fender Stratocaster HWY 1 SSS. It's great. Love the sound. Who cares if the guitar increases in value...It's a great guitar. I recommend one.

I'm inclined to agree with the opinion that it does'nt really matter if a guitar goes up in value as much as it matters that it is a more desireable guitar to play.

I still have my very first guitar that I got when I was 9 years old. It's not a Fender (unfortunately), It's a Vox. 1967 Phantom VI to be exact. Many people seem to desire this guitar, but it is'nt really a great guitar to play. I'm not saying it's unplayable, it is, but it's not one that makes you want to keep picking it up and playing, despite it's unique looks and sound.
I'm getting off the subject here. I tried the Highway One, and I liked a lot of things about it, but if I bought one, I would do certain things to it right off the bat. Have the finish sprayed and buffed to a high gloss... dress the frets at the edges of the fretboard... install LSR and locking tuners... and possibly try some different pickups.
The whole point being, I would make it a guitar that I would never want to put down.

The one I played in the store had a really nice neck too, but the frets were really overhanging the edges of the fretboard. The way I wrap my hand around the neck sometimes...well, that could be a little rough.
Over all, I would say the Highway one is a great guitar to start out with if you have the intent to modify it to a great degree. Even the pups sounded pretty good in the store, but I'd have to try them out through my ADA stacks to know if they are keepers or not.
