F Hopkins is right to be concerned about the S1 wiring. That's a tricky little gizmo on the bottom of that switch: I wouldn't want to mess with that without being very sure I understood the wiring schematic first.

So happens one of my Strats is an HSS with the S1, so of course it is possible to add a humbucker - though I simply have no idea if the S1 has the same circuit board with the 'bucker as with a single coil in the bridge.

And others are also correct that putting a humbucker in a Strat is not going to win you the sound of a Les Paul or other PAF type pickup equiped guitar. Humbuckers in Strats are another voicing again.

A different option might be to look at a set of Lace Sensors. I have those in yet another Strat and I love 'em. They don't sound like humbuckers, that ain't the point. But they are very different than regular single coils - big, warm, round; jazzy at the neck, hugely aggressive at the bridge. I use the Silver, Blue, Red set - but it is hard to advise you which ones to get without having a clearer idea of your requirements. Maybe just start with a Blue in the bridge and see how you like it. If you do, then you can purchase additional ones with higher or lower output and shift them around as required.

A nice way to go, and much more reasonable than fiddling about with full sized humbuckers.

A thought, anyway...

Thanks, I was actually coming back on this post to ask if anyone has ever heard of the lace sensor pickups! I'm going to have someone who's built guitars and is familiar with the s1 system help me on this so I don't think it'll be screwed up. I think everyone is right about the humbucker issue... a strat with humbuckers isn't a les paul! I think I'll look into those pickups mentioned in the previous post...

thanks all for your opinions

I'll keep this updated

oh and does someone know of a page with an explanation of the Fender made lace sensors? their page on the pickups section of fender.com has no description...

Yes I have them. I've used them at one time or another in most of my guitars, mainly the...

- gold (vintage)
- silver (fat strat, more midrange)
- blue (paf humbucker tone)

I love them myself, but not everyone can sound good on them. You need a stronger attack and technique to get a good tone out of them, I think. If you have a light touch, you'll sound very muddy and onfocused on them, just an FYI.

My main strat has a SD JB Jr on the bridge, Silver Lace in the middle and a Blue on the neck.

Great setup for me and not looking to change it anytime soon. Very versatile this way, and still very strat-like.

That guitar is a work of art. I wouldn't touch it.

But if you must, another possibility is to either buy or create a new "loaded" pickguard so you could stash the original away or maybe even use it in another guitar. Of course you still wouldn't be able to use full-sized humbuckers without routing but you could use lace sensors etc.

By the way, my '89 Strat Plus with gold lace sensors also came with a Fender TBX tone control which is supposed to compliment the sensors. Here's a Strat Plus wiring schematic. It looks like the same one that came with my original paperwork.

EDIT:
--------------------

I see that lace sensor manufacturer actually offers pre-wired loaded pickguards....
