I have been walking around thinking a lot about this question!

Q:
What kind of strat is the John Mayer signature strat, if you erase the signature and get some other p'ups?

My A:
I don't know for sure, but is it a `tuned´ '62 vintage strat? (Maybe hot rod)

You see the point? I don't know what it is?!
Do you?

JM is heavy on SRV influence. You should check out the specs on a 62 RI if you can find one in products, then the SRV Artist series guitar, and then the JM with regard to neck profile, radius, and string gauges. Then go on the stomp, find these guitars on the wall, and play them to get the 'feel' of the neck.

As far as bodies are concerned, you'd have to remove the pickguard to check out the routing on all three to verify that they have been vintage routed for SSS, and even then, there's a shoulder in the 60's routing which the 50's don't have. Also, count the number of screws in the pickguard. Anything with a vintage nod will have 8. Later guitars have 11.

If you really want to get technical about cosmetics for example, the '57 era guitars have a deeper offset body carve, and vintage instruments have what are called 'soft' body contours meaning that the line angles where the surfaces transition into each other are more curvlinear.

So you would really have to examine each of these factory delivered instruments to compare them in that fashion.

Hope that's of some help.

Doc

The Mayer strat is very similar to the SRV- and the '62. They are routed SSS. The Mayer has a nice satin finish on the neck and the string tree is moved back.

Other than that, there is no spring cover in the back and no holes (which looks really cool)

The big difference is in the pickups and wiring- if you wanted to recreate one you could get pretty close with a hot rod 62 and some of his big dipper pickups

Look up info on SRV stratocaster or look up "John Mayer Strat" on Google or something! :D
