I'm sure you all may have seen this question before but,

Can anyone tell me what wood was used to make this years models were made from and if it is a one piece body ?

Thanks in advance !

Probably Alder.

If it's transparent, it could be ash, but if it was transparent, you wouldn't need to ask how many bit's of wood the body's made from. (which is anyones guess if it's painted.)

Welcome to the Forum.

I know there's lots of basswood been used in MIJs and CIJs at present and for a long time, in addition to alder - as well as ash where spec'd. Back to mid-80s though, I have no idea.

Not too helpful, eh?

I thought that was just Squier using Basswood.

Who was using Poplar and when?

Shall we just forget about it and promise to go out and talk to girls?

It is painted red but I've chiped the lower horn. The wood is pale and with a nice wood grain showing. Does this help ?

Now you've had the girls idea before. How does your talk of dingleberries go down with them? Moths to a flame, I expect?

Anyway. Near the top of this page the gentleman gets very defensive on the subject of Japanese basswood, and a glance further down shows it is the majority timber, though not exclusive, currently at least.

I used to recommend that website for Japanese Fenders, but no longer...

Strange to relate, women don't go as crazy for my dingleberries as you might imagine. I think even my wife reckons they're a bit walnutty!

Didn't get as far as getting burnt. Couldn't raise the fella for weeks at a time and came to feel I wasn't about to start giving out credit card numbers to someone with those kind of communications.

There is another well-known MIJ supplier on the net in our part of the world - and I got exactly the same story from him, too. Good grief, haven't these people heard of the recession? Got to try a bit harder, these days.

In the end I finally placed the order at Charlie Chandler's very nice shop, and my Fiesta Red 57 is presumably riding up the Suez Canal in a sea container right about now.

You'll see it soon after I do...

Through the paint coating on my brothers '88 tele I can see a seamline therefore I'm assuming the body is made of pieces.

If I was to remove some paint in the pickup cavity would that help me see?
I'm going to install a seymour duncan antiquity p/u in a couple of weeks (bridge position)

Thanks for all of your comments and information guyz !

Rick

Don't do it. It would likely take a good eye to determine the timber from a very small exposed area, and it makes little difference anyway. It sounds how it sounds: knowing whether it is alder or basswood or perhaps poplar (on a MIJ? Not sure) is not going to change it.

Similarly, the number of pieces it's made from. Quite unlikely to be one piece beneath a solid finish - but that is not certain. And again, it doesn't matter. Single piece bodies are only significant as far as looks beneath a transparent finish are concerned, and even then it usually doesn't matter. There is no quality/musical issue as far as body pieces is concerned.

I understand your curiosity, and if you keep a weather eye open when reading about the history of the company you may discover that the Japanese production tended towards a given timber at a given time. There are '80s MIJ owners on this site who may or may not be able to tell you which timber their own guitar is made from. All of that is only going to be an indicator, not a definite answer.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it. It is of only notional significance (once you can hear for yourself how the guitar sounds): anyone who attached more or less value to a Strat depending upon which wood lay beneath a solid finish would be being a little silly.

Should be a high quality instrument. Play and enjoy: that's what counts!

Cheers - C

Fender Japan has some interesting models, for sure.
They are sooooo tempting.

I was under the assumption that in 85 that all or most strats where being made in Japan while the American facilities were undergoing re-tooling ! At least I was told that once. I'm talking the guitars marked Made in Japan not crafted or what ever the decal was. That's why some people look for that era strats that say made in Japan. I know I have one with the made in japan (85) that I believe plays just as good or better than a MIA. When I first bought my 07 MIA ash Deluxe I was frustrated that it did not play or feel as good. After a professional setup it played as well. I'm not talking about hardware or pups just the body and the 57 ri neck on the MIJ. Am I crazy! :?

I think Chet can give us the scoop on this if he will? :? :) 8)
