Wow. You're not the only one round here with back problems. But that is dramatic.

Strangely, for me standing is easier than sitting, for lower spine reasons as well as the rest. There was a point at which I was contemplating making myself a balsawood Strat, but things are a little improved from then, at least...

I'm falling apart Ceri! I know what you mean though about getting in a comfortable position. Sometimes sitting and then standing, just have to keep moving around. I don't know how you did your Townsend/Angus Young moves!!

I can tell you, there was serious complaining from the joints and muscles for a day or two after!

I saw The Police twice on their recent reunion tour. First show Andy got up on the drum riser and took a very modest jump off it at the end of Message in a Bottle. The big screens showed an expression on his face which said, "Oops - better not do that again"! I thought to myself, I know that feeling...

This is not a very rock 'n' roll discussion, is it?

Cheers - C

Man I am with you guys :!: It's called getting old. Give me my guitar and my comfortable Tama stool and let me play.

Got a nice picture somewhere of Louis Armstrong sitting in a rocking chair in bedroom slippers playing his trumpet. That's my idea of rock 'n' roll these days!

But if I just want to veg a bit and just noodle, I will play sitting down. I'll hang out with my kids playing video games while I play acoustically with the Strat.

If Eddie Van Halen can have hip-replacement surgery, then this is indeed a very rock & roll conversation!

Oh dear: we'll be requesting Brad to come up with a Forum walking frame next! (Do you call that a Zimmer frame in America, or is that just our name for it?)

Keith Richards may be old, but at least he's still climbing those coconut trees! Go for it, Keith!

One thing that I have noticed about the Stratocaster is how comfortable it is to play sitting down. Some of my other guitars, I like to play them standing just so they don't pierce into my rib cage.

The problem is, I am always tempted to play sitting down with the Strat, and now I don't play it as well standing up. So now I try to alternate, one day standing one day sitting. What do you guys do in this area? Just wondering.

The Strat was designed to be played sitting down which is why it is so comfortable. That's how guitarists played in the early and mid-1950s.

I prefer standing. When I play sitting down, I have to bend my wrist too much and it has caused problems where I had to stop playing for a while until the pain went away.

Wow, and I used to feel bad for myself when my wrist or finger tips would hurt. I never thought about how it would feel if I had back problems. I give you guys credit.

I usually play new stuff sitting. Once I get the hang of it, I start playing it standing to get a feel for both positions.

I want to start playing in a band so I am really trying to get comfortable standing for everything. But I have noticed if you want to play that hard solo while standing, perfect. You can put your foot on the amp, and put the guitar on your knee. It feels just like you are sitting. Its a little trick I came up with, I'm sure I'm not the first though. But I really want to play standing, just as good as I am sitting.

Depends, if I'm in the bedroom watching TV and just noodling I'll sit down but most of the time I stand. I get a much better groove going when I'm standing.

I learned to play sitting because my teacher was an orchestral/big band type guitarist. In rock days of course I usually stood even while practicing because I found that practicing something sitting but then playing it standing could be problematic sometimes.

Now I play/jam sitting usually but due to a bad back, I've had to relearn the good posture I learned way back in the beginning. My tendency is to lean over the neck and that does a nasty number on my lower back. It led to my GF saying one day recently (while I was trying to sit up properly straight and play) that I looked like one of those old ads with people playing guitars -- those from the days when guitar was usually played sitting.

I play sitting down by myself. With friends, it's always standing up because I find it easier turning on my pedals.
