I've been thinking of retiring my MIM Standard lately. Serious GAS attack!

The thing is the MIM 70's Classic Strat actually costs more than the HWY 1 Strat over here (dunno 'bout the States). Why is that? I thought the US guitars were always the more expensive ones.

What I'm looking for is the groovy CBS style headstock, good p-ups (SSS classic rock Strat sounds) and probably a not too beefy neck (standard c-shape?) since my hands are fairly small.

When it comes to p-ups I know it's hard to describe a sound, but which model has the best ones for that glassy, classic Strat sound? Any thoughts on build quality, playability and sound on these models?

Thanks guys.

Well...obviously. But my MIM Strat sounds different from the MIM 60's Classic my friend just bought.

Hello HeavyPsych,

My choice would be the Highway 1.
Great neck with jumbo frets and
good sounding pickups.
Nothing against classic Mexico but
I'd take the H1 first.

Cheers.

I own a HWY 1 SSS. I like it very much, the sound is awesome. I say play both in the store, buy the one you like best.

Not sure why the MIM would cost more. I like the MIM Classic and Deluxe lines, but I would choose the Hwy1. I love mine.

I would go for the Highway1. I have played both quite a bit and the electronics in the Highway1 with the greasebucket tone circuits and all make for a much sweeter sounding guitar.

Thanks for the input guys.

BTW I don't think the thinner nitro finish on the HWY 1 will bother me. I don't really care if the finish will show "premature" wear. As long as it's a good sounding guitar that plays well a few dings are OK.

I play my '02 Hwy1 Strat all the time and I'm not seeing the wear that everyone anticipated. I do have one ding on the front, but that's it.

As it turns out there's a guy selling a black 2008 HWY 1 Strat just around the block from where I live. It has one or two small dings. I'm waiting for him to set a date and time for when I can come over and play around with it.

If there's nothing wrong with it I'm gonna go for it and save about $300 compared to buying a new one. It's about 4 months old, so the warranty should be there also.

What I SHOULD be doing right now is save up for a trip to Oz/NZ this December....oh well...gotta strike while the iron's hot, eh?

If his HWY 1 is as good as mine, you'll love it.

I now own a flat black 2007 Fender HWY 1 Strat with a rosewood fretboard. Yay! Got it at a pretty good price considering it's less than 4 months old (or rather off the shelf). It needs some adjustment to fit my playing style as always, but I'm really liking the jumbo frets so far. Verrrry comfortable, never thought jumbo frets would make a guitar easier to play - now it makes sense. Bends are a walk in the park.

The nitro finish feels almost like fresh paint that hasn't really "set" yet. Smooth neck! Weird, the fretboard is kinda dry like a few other forum freaks have reported. Almost dusty and chalky. Out comes the Jiffy Lube! The p-ups don't sound quite like I expected but that could be due to that other guy's setup.

I enjoy trying to set my guitars up myself even though I need some qualified help sometimes. Now I have a new toy to tinker with!

Highway one strats are really good as for the MIM classic series 70's I cannot honestly give an opinion because Ive never played one... but after doing a little research on it ... I hear its pretty damn good... they even say their neck is made in the US and shipped to Mexico only for paiting and stuff... Id have to put my hands on one of those to know if its true :P however if they compare it to american strats it must be good!!! :D
