I recently had the chance to try out a John Mayer stratocaster and I was blown away by the pickups. Im currently making a custom strat from parts that I have and I was just wondering if anybody can recommend me some pickups that are similar to the big dippers in the John Mayer strat?

vintage noiseless are scooped sounding but a bit brittle sounding too. I'd try them and experiment with pots, caps and resistors in the control cavity to warm em up a smidgen.
You need orvilleowner and chetfeathers to advise you on that front though.

The pickups in his signature's are pretty unique. They are low output pickups with scooped mids. The low output of the pickups is designed to help push the power tubes and not the preamp tubes. I have not heard another set of pickups that sound the same or even close as the big dippers. You can find them on ebay every once in a while.

This might be close:

(but higher output)

What I have been doing is using the Dimarzio Area 58' with a midscoop control:

It works beautifully.

I agree with cu_jarrett. I have a mayer strat and haven't heard another set of pick ups like the big dippers. Keep an eye on ebay and you may be able to get a complete pickguard set up.

You'll pay a huge premium for Big-Dippers on Ebay as they are not available from any stores individually. FYI...A Fender sponsored artist told me that the JM Big-Dippers are the most requested pick-ups by other artists as well. Thus the frienzy on Ebay. In terms of tone...they blow me away especially on my THD Bi-Valve, Fulltone OCD and Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive. In the bridge position with the tone rolled off a bit, you get a gnarly growl and very Les Paul-ish sound coming from my John Mayer Limited!
