Adjust the pickup height, or lower the action on the high E. All my strats actions taper down drasticaly on the treble side.

Yeah, tip the pickup to raise the treble end.

angle the pickups so that the treble side is higher than the bass side. I have mine so the treble side is lower but thats just my preference.

What amp are you using?

sorry i meant the pickup height not action...im using a couple of amps, a polytone a mesa and if i have to go to a gig on the tube an aer.
the spacing of the polepieces is way off...not sure if that has much to do with it...

Could it be a dead string? Have you had this problem with different strings?

the polepieces are meant to be very staggered to compensate for quieter middle strings. Other than the volume pot/tone pot's wiring and components or amp/speaker settings i cant think of much else. Do you use a lot of pedals? if you link shedloads of effects together it can cause quite severe signal degradation.

found this on the kinman site.
Quote:
5) One string is dull or dead. This indicates either a dud string or a dead magnet. These are a rare
occurrence but does happen occasionally.
Test: The strength of the magnet can be tested by comparing with other magnets using a small wand
made from a cut-off from a wound E string. Holding the wand at one end in your fingers put the other
end onto the top of the magnet and flick it away from the magnet. In this way you can get a good idea
of how strong the magnets are just by feeling how much force is required to make the string depart
from the top of the magnet. Compare various magnets and see if the suspect one is less strong than
any others that are behaving satisfactorily.
o Solution: Fit a new string or contact us to arrange re-magnetization as the case may be.
End

heres a link, loads about pickups there

ill check out the link. i put a Duncan SSL-5 in the bridge and moved the old bridge to the neck. i have no quiet strings in the neck position now. so it wasnt the string. i'll check the pole pieces on the removed pup...
