I had a 1983 57' reissue model that was my all time favorite after I had customized it to my taste, that was the best hands down.
As far as a production model, I would have to say the 1983 Elite Stratocaster was the best right off the shelf

Fhopkins, we want to see the gilmour, pics please. I'm not even a gilmour fan i just know how patient and excited you were about it. The best i played off the shelf was a playboy model.

Although I've already answered, in a similar thread, I'll repeat myself. It was a mid-80s model Deluxe Stratocaster, with (I think) Lace pickups, and instead of the typical 5-way blade switch, it had (from the factory) three push-push switches, one for each pickup. It's really too bad that I couldn't afford it (outright or lay-away), at the time, or I'd be the current owner. The push-push switches are way sweeter than Danelectro's "Blow-Switch," on their 3-pickup models, as this Deluxe Strats pickups are individually activated. This allows for: bridge only; bridge/middle; bridge/neck; middle only; middle/neck; neck only; bridge/middle/neck (yes, all three pickups activated!) switching.

I had been planning to modify my '96 MIM Stratocaster like this, but with Seymour Duncan Lipstick pickups, although I'll likely leave the '96 as it is, and buy yet another new Stratocaster for this mod.

The only guitar I know of with the 3 push-push switches are the Elite Stratocasters, which I mentioned earlier in this string. I used to own two of them and got rid of them. ( I know, feel free to throw punches. We all have our moments of stupidity.)
By the way, those pickups were not Lace Sensors, they were actually low-impedance, active pickups designed by Fender at the time. Periodically, you'd have to replace the 9V battery under the pickguard, and there was also a fourth pup coil referred to as a "Dummy" coil. This coil could be added to any one, or all of the three pup coils just by dialing in the MDX control. This would have been the middle knob which would be commonly looked upon as the first tone knob on any standard Stratocaster. The 3rd knob on the Elites were the TBX Control. Both the MDX and TBX had midway detente positions,
I still which I had both of mine. There has never been another Strat like that since them

The best Strat I had ever played was a Highway One HSS that was in the music store in the neighboring town. It played wonderfully and sounded like a gift from God. 'Tis a shame though, I almost wish my Strat sounded like that, but I fear if I mod my Strat I'll lose my tone.

Tone is ALWAYS irreplaceable! After all, no two guitars sound alike.
