Strats from the 1970's were 'CBS-era' instruments. I had a bunch of them in the 70's and 80's so here's a first-hand review:

Unless it's from 1970-1971 they came with 3-bolt necks. CBS was trying to shave costs and this was one of the poorer ideas they had. The 'c' shaped necks were small at the nut and had 21 frets (mostly).
The bodies were mostly natural and very heavy. Tuners were fair.
Bridge pickup on the ones I had were spikey and thin sounding but the neck pu was decent.

The maple boards were more popular but there are lots of rosewood necks out there if you search the auction sites.

You will pay lots for one of these guitars, although I must tell you a new Fender Custom Shop reissue will be a superior guitar for less money.
Good luck wit your search.

That seems a bit random!

If you don't know if they are any good or if there is anything special about them, why do you want to buy one!?

I want to buy a jellypopfishstand. I don't know if they're any good?

The quality of CBS era strats is hit and miss. a original would be expensive and troublesome.
Old Albert's lucky if he's got a good one.

You can get a new mexican one for about 500 quid.

http://www.fender.com/products//search. ... 0137000321

In comes in Olympic White with rosewood neck, and has the proper 70 spec (big headstock, bullet truss rod, F tuners) As it's new you can be sure of it's quality
You can ding it up a bit, go to Topshop buy some tight jeans and a skinny tie, and bob's your uncle.

Dude it's a Strat (and that is a GOOD thing). The CBS era Fenders got a bad rap in general; some of the complaints were justified, others were just bitching and moaning becuause they were different.

I own a 74 Strat with a rosewood neck and it's always played fine. I bought it back in 1980 at a pawnshop. It was my main guitar for most of the 80's and never let me down on or off stage.

That being said, if the only reason you want to buy one now is because it's a 70's Strat, I wouldn't do it. The prices are just getting ridiculous. If you're a collector . . . okay. But if you are planning on playing it you can get the 70's look at a much more reasonable price by purchasing a new reissue or vintage vibe guitar

Hi thestrokesfan!

I have a 2004 mexican '70s Strat Classic with rosewood fingerboard and sunburst finish. I know they do a white, also recently added is a USA version which looks good too!

I bought it because I fell in love with the 70s models. They got a lot of stick for various reasons but these issues were mostly due to the fact that Fender was in real trouble financially around the 70s and 80s and quality was expensive... it's not true of them all which is the problem when buying a genuine 70s strat (that, and the sheer expense of it)! When you got a good one though... oh my god! Fortunately, modern day Fender are a lot better off so it's less of a gamble!

The features I like are the large headstock which helps add body and sustain to the sound (more mass at the end), the bullet truss rod. the string trees, the vintage tremolo, the 3 pin neck joint with the micro-tilt system (seems really stable although I've heard of problems from other people - not with this model though) and the cosmetics - the hardware has that 'F' stamp etc and the vintage 70s fender logo just set it off - that look and that tone are pure funky 70s goodness!

It has a great tone to it that's uniquely 70s. It's a little darker, meaner sounding when compared to my other strats. It's a good thing!

The finish is hard as nails too. I gigged mine heavily and there literally isn't a single scratch on it.

I'd recommend it. Don't let the Mex stamp put you off as it really surprised me how well constructed it was. And the price is great. If it's an issue for you, try the USA reissue!

Whatever you decide, try before you buy and really hunt for that special one...!

I suppose the price would also have something to do with your decision. If the price is reasonable for you, and if you like its sound and feel, GO FOR IT !!

Personally I would really love a combination of the white color with a rosewood neck. I have a 72 strat, and I would never part with it, I just LOVE it :D . A few changes were made like locking tuners, a brass nut and one pickup was changed (the neck one). I just love the tone of the guitar. You can notice how nice it is even with the guitar unplugged.
