I'm going out today to look at Fenders for my 16 y/o daughter. I had started a thread about which guitar might be right for her and got a lot of good suggestions. I showed her a few options. She wants one like my Fender.

She does not think my ESP LTD is "comfortable" nor does she like the sound and wants to learn on a guitar simular to my Fender HWY 1. I was looking at MIM Stratocasters and Upper-end Squire models. People suggested a Squire Jagmaster, Classic Vibe, or Delux Strat. I'll keep my eyes out for these options as well.

Wish me luck.

Hello Rkreiser,

Well if your daughter is serious I'd go for a
Mexican guitar if you ever decide to sell it
people generally respect the MIM more.

Now If your convinced she is totally committed
and you have the do-re-mi buy her a highway 1,
but as you know the finish is more fragile.

And a Merry Christmas to all.

Cheers.

You may also want to look into a Mustang-style Fender too. Smaller and more comfortable for girls. Good luck with it.

I got an MiM Std. Strat and I often compare it to my 61 Gibson Melody Maker. I've also gotten quite a few compliments about my MiM. Go for the MiM, after all, its the same thing as an Am. Std. except for the pickups and finish. (and the missing 22'nd fret.)

Thanks All,

We're going for the MIM Fender HSS Stratocaster. We went looking and still haven't found "the one" she's looking for. She's looking for a specific color (Electron Blue with Rosewood Neck). We came close to getting the Midnight Whine for $350, but she's still holding out. We may have to order the color she wants and pay $399 plus tax; however, there have been excellent sales going on and were hoping to stumble on the color she wants for the cheaper price.

If later down the line she wants the HWY 1 Stratocaster or American Deluxe, she'll have to buy that one.

As soon as she gets it (Christmas) I'll have her post her guitar on the forum.

Merry Christmas

I'd vote for the MIM too (maybe cuz I have one). Nice guitar, and doesn't break the bank.

Here's an electron blue if you can't find one in a store.

And.......depending on what state you're in......you might even avoid the sales tax. I've bought from this site and have saved lots in sales tax.

Good luck on the purchase. Let us know what you got her.

I'm all for the US made instruments but there ain't nothing wrong with the MIM's and/or Squiers that a pro set up and some new pickups won't fix. Heck I upgraded the pickups on my American Strat and Tele so whatever floats your boat.

Make sure to get her a good amp too. No matter what anyone says about wood and finishes and nut material and blah blah blah, most of your "tone" comes from your pickup and amp choice. If you cut corners there, you aren't going to sound good.

Have her try the Squier Duosonic. It's lightweight, short scale and looks and sounds decent, imo.

Here's an update on the Guitar for my daughter. We went out and looked. We searched 3-4 guitar shops and several pawn shops. My daughter finally says to me that she did not realize that guitars were so expensive. We came close to getting her the Fender MIM HSS. She looked at me and said that it wasn't as good as mine (the sound) and she decided not to get it.

She has decided that she is going to play my ESP LTD. If she gets into it, she says that she is going to get a job. Her goal is to buy an American Deluxe Stratocaster with the HSS set up like the one she played in one of the shops (costs over $1000). I told her I would help her pay for it. Then she said something that only a father could be proud of, she told me she wants to buy her own guitar...otherwise she won't appreciate it's value.

I hope that she doesn't lose her focus. Let's see what happens in a year.
