I have a 1962 Strat that I bought when I was 15 and played in a Rock bacd for 4 years. 41 years later, I am retired, and ready to sell the Strat.

I took it to a Guitar Center for appraisal, and they said I had to have the neck fixed, and the center pickup is not as loud as the others. They warned me that I had to be careful who fixed it to keep its vintage value for resale.

Should I talk to Fender, or who would you recommend fixing a vintage Strat to keep it in original condition. Currently everything is original.

Thanks.

I am assuming you don't want to keep it as a playing guitar. I would leave it as original as possible and note any shortcomings in the instrument's description when you go to sell it. Replacement of parts, other than with genuine period parts, and less than museum-quality repairs will surely decrease collector intere$t. I'd recommend cleaning and conditioning the outer surfaces with Fender approved products and keeping it stored in a hard case in a climate-stable environment .... OMG, I sound like one of those fossils on Antique's Roadshow!

DON'T CHANGE ANY PARTS!!!

Don't trust GC to give a reliable appraisal. For $50 you can send a good description and detailed photos, including serial number and neck stamp, to George Gruhn (gruhn.com). He's the man as far as vintage guitars go. There's no one better.
If you have a written apparaisel from Gruhn, everyone will know it's reliable.
If you try to sell with a verbal appraisel from GC, no one will care. GC is the Sears of guitar stores. The guy who gave the appraisel has no industry creds and could be selling vaccum cleaners next week.

If you start letting people mess with the pickups, electronics and such, you risk losing value. By the way...whats wrong with the neck? Is it cracked? Warped? Just needs reset?

I had not tightened the strings for over 20 years, and when they did that at the Guitar Center, some of the strings were rubbing the frets, so they said the neck needed to be adjusted. Also, the center pickup is not as loud as the others. He kept moving the 3-way switch, and some sound came out of the middle pickup, but not as loud as the others. They gave me a long explanation about magnetic stuff in the pickups etc.

I have never had the guitar apart, so it might be a wire problem, but I would like to have someone that works on vintage guitars look at it, instead of me taking it apart.

Or better yet, sell in "as is" and let the collector have their favorite repairman look at it.

Thanks for the input, I will look at the gruhn.com web site.
