I received information on a guitar believed to be from 70's (CBS period)

" So this strat has a few changes, such as, Keys (schaler?), and a brass nut. Not too sure about the body.
There are no visable serial numbers on the guitar, however, there may be one if I take the neck off of the body, which I don't want to do. The plate has 4 screws.
I'm selling the guitar for it's playability, not for it's collectible value"

Given the information and pictures I'm hoping you strat pros can help me out a bit here by identifying the guitar and give some detail to it. As always I know I can count on you guys and I thank you for that.

Thanks,
Ben

Well the serial number should be on the neck plate and 71 to 80 were 3 bolt neck plates then in 81 to 83 they went back to 4 bolt on what is known as the Smith Strat. The latter ones will have the serial number on the peg head.

so that means that if this man claims there isn't a serial number on it then the backplate has been swapped out. It's a mysterious strat which is why i called your attention towards it. thanks any more info greatly appreciated.

This is my 1977 strat. The serial nunber should be on the head stock.Image
Also if it has the original pickguard on it, there should be a sticker on the under side of it.

So was there a time that the serial number left the neck?

Theres no bullet truss rod adjuster either, if you magnify the picture you can see its missing.

Almost looks like a Highway 1 neck.......

Looks like it has the "Original Contoured Body Patented" sticker on it.

Yes the serial numbers were move to the pegheads in 1976 until then they were on the neck plate. The neck plates were the 3 bolt plates for the 70 's because they were using Leo's Micro adjusmet system he developed as a consultant for CBS. Then the Smith Strat went on to the 4 bolt neck plate.

since its a 70's peghead with no serial number and it has 4 bolt backplate, does this not check in?

I believe it to be a bullet. It is slightly noticeable.

4 bolt neck plate just not right for 70's should be a 3 bolt just like the 77 shown.

couldnt see the bullet on the enlarged image. Heres a copy i enlarged of your headstock

I'm no expert on guitar dating. That doesnt look like a 70's headstock to me, infact the truss adjuster surround doesnt look like fender. The nut looks like its hanging off on the bass side, which suggests to me that its butted up to the fretboard not slotted into it.

Those pictures aren't good enough to tell for sure what it is.

As a '70s Strat, it would have started life with a 3-bolt neck plate (with serial number). If someone converted it to a 4-bolt, the serial number would be gone. It is usually quite obvious to tell if this mod has been made --- you would need a picture of the back.

That finish looks weird to me.

I'd want to see a better picture of the headstock and one of underneath the pickguard too. A shot of the disassembled neck heel would tell a lot too.

You won't find out what, if anything, is in the neck pocket unless you take it apart. This is a low risk operation.
