so i've recently taken to refinishing my old squire into a sorta 50's/60's reissue. basically all that i kept was the body, electronics (cuz i had to fix them a long time ago anyways so they are still good), and the neck. eventually i would like to get a maple neck but since i ain't got the green to purchase one rosewood will do. mostly the parts are from allparts. things like pickguard, p'up covers, knobs and switch cover. but i got the custom shop fat 50's pickups. its going from a red to sea-foam green. should be done in about a week.

Cool! I like the idea you've got there. I don't care for the painted headstock, but do like that color. And with your pups, that should be a great guitar.

I'm in the middle of refinishing a natural finish 80s Japanese clone into a daphne blue-ish. I was able to pick up a Squier VM pickguard with the duncan-designed SC101s for mine, which will be an upgrade over hte previous Affinity pg, which was an improvement over the stock cheapies.

Mine has a maple fb, which gives it a nice retro look, even though I'd like to replace the neck someday.

Good luck with it and be sure to keep us updated with the pics.

While I can appreciate the work going into it, and the idea, I'm not sure if I'd do the same. Not to do all that work, and put all those good parts onto a Squier and think it will really be anything like a reissue. Just a waste of time, money and effort in my opinion. MIM standard? Yeah, maybe - but not a Squier.

Sorry. Keep at it though. You posted this for opinions, and this is just mine. I hope it goes well though, and that you're happy with it. Post some pics when its done.

I think this is exactly what that old Squier lying under the bed is for. If painting the headstock I'd take the opportunity to fill those tree holes and put in staggered tuners instead. Though of course that takes it away from the '50s/'60s theme.

There's folks out here love these kinds of threads. You too, 66musicmaster! Keep those pics coming, now...

Good luck - C

I have been chastised for lack of pics on my refin project on other forums too. It's in the final polishing stages now. Pics soon.

I don't know that I'd ever mess with my CV, but I am using the strat as practice for the Musicmaster II refin.

Squiers and the like are great for trying out ideas without ruining an expensive guitar if it doesn't work out. And they end up as nice PERSONALIZED guitars.

I can't wait to see the seafoam green on that original post.

Awesome work!

Especially for coming out of a rattle can.
So are you going to seal it? Minwax makes a really good polyurethane that comes in a spray.
Did you tape the edges of the headstock so that there is a clean line?

Really motivating. I may have to track down a squire or MIM strat this weekend.

I say "Tinker Away"!!! I love to work on my guitars, and get great joy and satisfaction, not to mention knowledge and insight, by wrenching on my guitars. You are very smart to work on a Squire to get experience, rather than ruin a nicer axe in the process of learning.
It is true that a Squire will never be a '57 Strat, but who cares??? If it suits your needs, and makes you happy, GREAT!!!
Everybody needs to remember, the sound that comes out of the output jack is what is important, not the location of it's manufacture. I know guys that can make a Squire sing. I have also seen the hackers in the music stores that can't make a MIA Deluxe Strat sound good.
