Hey Stratheads-

I am man enough to admit when I am wrong. A few months ago I said some unfavorable things about Mr. Mayer and his music. I was wrong. I just listened to the John Mayer Trio and was blown away. So much soul and very powerful playing-

Hats off to you Mr. Mayer..I admit I was wrong and I am sorry-

i despised john when he first came out cuz he was so bubble gum pop. then i too got the trio album and was like "well you might be a poppy song writer but you got some chops man!"

dont worry dude,
i think that is what he wants. i realized by his interviews, he seems the type that doesnt want you to like him because hes famous, but because when he picks up his guitar, he gives you a glimpse of himself.
he likes to be complex.

i know when i play in front of friends im alittle nervous.
but when i play infront of family it is vulnrability at its best.

i had the same feeling when i saw him in eric claptons crossroads 2004/2007. i thought crap than this guy play. and sing. and write music and songs.

I recently bought one of his DVD concerts where he plays solo for a bit, then the trio, then the full band. Lots of great music in that DVD. I really like his style of music.

Yep, on his "Where the light is" DVD he rips on the Jimi cover of Wait until tomorrow....

The Trio is my favorite. I also like how he incorporates the favor of Hendrix and SRV in his pop tunes. I own his signature stratocaster and can't say enough about the big dipper pick-ups.

How do you think a player like Mayer, or other famous players, learn covers? Do you think they are looking at tab, hve someone show them, or play by ear?

Thanks,
Erik

Good question. My guess is their approach is like ours, sometimes ear, sometimes sheet music...

His playing is good, it's when he starts to sing that I need to turn it off.
Sorry John fans.

im more than sure he learnt by ear. "where the light is" has to be his best dvd,cd. i love his style, in vultures during the solo he goes through mini riffs, while staying with the rhythm of that song. totally cool.
yeah "wait till tomorrow" who did you think i was" and "out of my mind" and "i dont need no doctor" serious jams there.

I've commented elsewhere that Mayer was perceptive enough to understand the market and find a commercial track to his present success. Though I don't personally care for that genre I take nothing away from his gifts. I far more appreciate him as a blues player,
As an aside, I really appreciated his off-hand comment on the recent TV concert which featured Buddy Guy at the close. Freely translated it went something like this:

"Well, that's the show.'' "Now we're gonna play some music!!!" :P

Doc

I really like his music and his guitar playing. However, I have a hard time watching him because he makes some seriously odd music "faces" when he sings and plays. Kind of like a modern-day Joe Cocker.
