I am looking to buy my first fender strat and have no idea which model would best suit me. Anyone help? I currently play an Epiphone Les paul but have decided to buy the authentic king of guitars. What should i be looking at as there seems to be so many choices, hope someone can help me
Thanks hopefully

Welcome to the forum....

That is a hard question for anyone else but you to answer - depends on a lot of variables, one of the most important being your budget.

The best advice I can give you is to try out a bunch of them, including a lot of the same model, to see which feels and sounds best to YOU for the style of playing you do. Then you can make the decision depending on that and your budget.
Most of the folks on this forum are going to tell you that the American Standard is the way to go if you can afford it - and they are probably right, if it feels good to you.
I own a Highway One and I love it. The Standard Strat, which is made in Mexico, is a fine guitar.
So again, it really boils down to what feels the best to the player...

i would go with a squire i only have one guitar and that is it and it has never faild me. to me it is the best but i could be wrong. it also depends on how much money you want to spend like the squire comes with a biginers book an amp 2 or 3 pickes and some back up strings. and it only costs 400 greens (canadian). whel thats my opinion

Good advise, couldn't have said it better myself. I also own a HWY 1 and love it. The only other suggestion I could give is try to play on an amp and effects you use at home. This will also give you some good clues as to which Guitar is a stud and which is a dud. Good luck :) :)

I'm afraid I don't know what the going rate is in the UK...but several forum members do and I am sure that they will pop in with input....

But I thought I saw another thread where someone said they could get a new American Standard for 700 pounds...

Hi Peetski1: I wonder where in Britain you are? Mr SpacePig is just running a thread about guitar shops in the UK which might be of use to you.

The price you mention would just about net you an American Standard Strat, for example here:

http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=8281

If you wanted to spring for that then it's a guitar that will happily last you a lifetime.

A bit pricey at this stage? In the products pages of this website have a look at Standard Stratocasters (not to be confused with American Standard Strats) which are made in the Mexican factory and are exceedingly good value for money and nice instruments that many highly respected members of this Forum play and swear by.

A couple of other interesting options. For a few dollars more I personally think the Lite Ash guitars (found in the Special Edition section of the products pages of this site) are excellent value for money. Nice timbers for body and neck, good Seymour Duncan designed pickups - what's not to like? A knockdown bargain at the price.

And another way to go are the Highway-1 Stratocasters. The most affordable Strats made in America, featuring big '70s style headstock and a thin matt nitrocellulose finish. A little different from your average Strat, and another bargain at the price.

Best advice of all is spend plenty of time touring around the Products pages on this site and get to know the options, because it can be a little confusing at first. The "specs" button on each page is your friend. Typing the model into Google will find you street prices for anything you are interested in.

Good luck, and welcome to the Forum!

- C

If you get a chance try a bunch of MIM Strats. Some say the quality can be hit or miss but I found one a few months ago that was stellar. Plus, it can be had for $399US. I don't know what that equates to in pounds.

A used MIA Std Strat would also be a nice find. Good luck on your search and welcome aboard!

I PUT TOGETHER A STRAT FOR MY SON FROM SCRATCH. IUSED E-BAY FOR PRACTICALLY ALL OF THE PARTS I PURCHASED A BODY AND THEN USED SEVERAL EBAY SOURCES SUCH AS RELIABLFENDER.COM AND THE METALSHOPPE FOR A LOADED PICKGUARD I PUT AN AMERICAN DELUXE NECK FROM RELIABLEFENDER AND THE TOTAL FOR EVERYTHING INCLUDING THE BODY AND BRIDGE,TUNERS RAN AROUND 700 US AND THEN I PAID A TECH TO FINISH IT OFF FOR AN ADDTL 100 US A LOT OF WORK BUT IT SOUNDS INCREDIBLE. THAT IS WHY I WANT TO LEARN HOW TO DO IT ALL MYSELF . MY SON LOVES IT

The Mexican Classic reissue Strats are nice. A little more expensive than just the Mexican Standards which are price at around #399.00 and they have to follow the same specs as the say the 50's, 60', 70', reissues to be close to the authenticity of the originals so your buying something in between like a regular Mexican Standard and an American, but the Mexican reissues are of a little better quality and to in the $600.00-$700.00 dollar range. These are more of the better and a little better quality Mexican models. I own the 70's (MIM) reissue Strat.
