I like the look of maple, tone, and the feel of maple. In my opinion, it makes an all around better fingerboard.

I think you may mean fretboard and not the neck. I think that the rosewood looks better but it also plays slower than the maple. I like to slide alot when making ninth chords and the maple gives a little more of a slick feel to allow for a smoother and when needed faster transition when sliding.

But if you are more concerned about looks then the rosewood will be a good choice you also have to figure in the color of the guitar.

The burst colored (i.e. brown sunburst, two tone sunburst and tobacco burst) look better with the rosewood fretboards but the crimson red, bright red and other bright colors look better with the maple necks.

But then to beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so then it boils down to what you like best to what catches your eye the most.

In terms of playability and sound, I prefer maple fretboard. They are much smoother and brighter than a rosewood. But in terms of looks, rosewood wins. I also don't mind rosewood's feel and tone, I just prefer maple.

blondes or brunettes? of course the brunettes represent maple necks because they give off a brighter sound.

I've preferred maple since the mid 80's and nothing will ever change my mind. I've used rosewood (which I can't stand the tone or look of), ebony (which is a good compromise between maple and rosewood), and obviously MAPLE!!! I've always been know as a soloist first and a rhythm player second so the brighter and more "attack ladden" sound of maple rules the roost!!! :D

I prefer Rosewood. The JT Tele I bought & gave my son was a maple board and might have been laquered to much,it just felt sticky. My next Tele/Strat I may give maple another shot. I also think you have to have the right color to have a maple board look right.

Although I like the looks of a maple fingerboard better, I prefer all the attributes of a rosewood fingerboard better.

What are your thoughts on Maple vs Rosewood necks? I'm a beginner. I currently play a Fender acoustic, but I'm looking at a American Series Strat or Highway One. Thoughts.....

Do a history search on this one. We spent a great deal of time kicking this around some months ago.

a maple neck with small frets can feel awfull.

i havnt compared them one against the other for a long time, but i think the rosewood neck is nicer to play, since the laqcuer seems to give a sticky feeling on the maple neck - the rosewood lets you fly lighter.

as far as sound goes: i own one strat, a japanease 57 reissue with a maple neck and it has a very strong sound, great sustain - maybe maple necks do have a strong sound.

to sum it up, if id see no noticable difference in sound, id go with the rosewood.

In another thread on this subjectI mentioned that I have two 2004 American Standard hardtails. One has a maple fingerboard and the other is rosewood. I had said that the maple fingerboard gave me a lot of trouble with my string bending. Well, I finally played past my problem and can bend strings on the maple fretboard without difficulties.

I like the feel of Maple, but the looks depend on the guitar. I like the fact that Rosewood shows less wear. Overall its a toss up.

So do I. But (differing from the above) I think rosewood looks better, too.

At the end of the day, though, there is no right or wrong answer here. If anything comes down to being purely a personal preference, this is it.
