What are your thoughts on Maple vs Rosewood necks? I'm a beginner. I currently play a Fender acoustic, but I'm looking at a American Series Strat or Highway One. Thoughts.....

On electrics... I just love the look of rosewood. It's just a personal pref!

both?

my strat's maple. i love that's it's brighter and snappier, definetly makes a big difference in the sound, but at the same time, my ibanez's and my tele have rosewood, which is also nice, it's definetly a darker sound to them, and it's okay, it balances it all out.

they've both got their uses, i just wish i could strip all the paint & laquer of them. the feel of my ibanez's stained oil neck, is incredible.

to the point of i might strip the back of the necks on my other guitars.

are we talking about the neck or the fingerboard here? because if you mean the finger board then i prefer maple. i own 3 guitars and 2 of them have rosewood fingerboards and the other one has maple and it just seems to play better. however the rosewood dose look better to me.

I prefer the Rosewood necks, but it can also depend on the color of the guitar as to whether or not it looks good. I just bought a Strat in Midnight Wine color and definitely felt the rosewood neck looked much better than the maple neck.

I like them both. They both feel very different but equally great to me.

As far as playing goes, I don't have a preference. But for looks, I love a maple neck. A few years ago I almost bought a 70's maple necked LP...just because it was beautiful. I still may someday.

Another consideration is that the maple necks come with a finish. The rosewood fretboards need a little more periodic care to protect them from the playing environment. I prefer rosewood .... but, the maple finish is nicer looking with some body colors.

All of my guitars have the rosewood fingerboard but I definitely like the looks of the maple on Fender guitars better. I think the only drawback is then you don't get the pearl inlay markers. They would look out of place on maple anyway.

The traditional wisdom is that maple has a bright tone while rosewood creates a warmer tone. I have several of both and while I prefer the maple, my (current) favorite Strat has rosewood. As for looks, it's a matter of taste.

I like the look and feel of maple necks, but i prefer the sound of rosewood. For me, it's a draw.

I think the sound of maple goes better with Strats and Teles, and I prefer the look, rosewood looks like a Gibson to me.

The maple necks look better. The rosewood necks play better...In my humble opinion.
