I go to my local music shop for lessons every saturday. At the end, i get to look at and my play the guitars there. Here are the guitars that i have played so far and liked:

Squier bullet (same one as mine, only in white)
Squier deluxe stratocaster (w/ seymour Sc-101's)
Fender MIM standard stratocaster (white w/maple)
Fender roadhouse stratocaster (tortoise shell pickguard and TS pickups)

I also saw a sunburst w/rosewood hwy 1 :)

I played through:
marshall mg100dfx
Vox Vr-15 (nice amp for the four knobs it has [gain, volume, volume, and tone])

There is also a '57 twin amp (tweed!!) at the store, tubes suck though...

Some guy i know from my school goes there and he played through it once... it sounded good, but what i meant though was that the tubes must have been old cause it started crackling and making a burning sound. When tubes get real old, they become sucky, and i know because for my lesson, i play through i fender amp they don't even make anymore (i think it's an ultrachorus, i can't find it on this site) and the tubes make a weird noise when i turn the amp off.

Hope i clarified things

The "UltraChorus" was a suped up version of the Princeton Chorus that came out in the 80's. Should have red knobs and it was solid state.

I really liked the 80's Princeton Chorus 2x10. Amazing reverb.

Unused and old tubes are what people pay extra for , that's why they are called NOS (new old stock) ! there could be all kinds of problems with the amp, something as simple as a solder crack unseen by the naked eye , etc. Tube amps are great unless it's not the sound your looking for ,Maybe you're into modeling! Most of the greatest guitar players use a 57 twin tweed (all hand wired etc) Check out this web site and look who uses them and the specs. To each his own my friend and good luck in finding what sound you want! Jeff Beck and Clapton to name a couple! 8)

No, i think that tubes are awesome! maybe the tubes weren't old, maybe they were just bad. Does the rectifier/capacitor/reactor make that crackling sound when it's old or bad?

Ultra chorus is solid state? ugh... wow. I have always thought of it being too rich sounding to be solid state? Or maybe that was the reverb...

There's also another fender in that room... i think it's from the metal head series... it's very black and it's model name starts with an 'm' and a number, though i can't remember.

There are so many fenders at that store... even squiers... bullet, hotrail strat, deluxe w/sc-101s, standard mim strat, a few highway ones, a squier cherryburst strat, some thinline, derick whibley, and hwy 1 telecasters, a MIM deluxe player's strat, but no AMerican standard strats. NO GIBSONS OR EPIPHONES, though, but similar style instruments, and plenty of jacksons, ibanezes, etc. And of course a little wall dedicated to the bass lovers. Countless amps too. Lots of fenders.

valve amps sound best when their on the verge of bursting into flames. A valve amp thats hardly been used for 10 years and then only at low volumes will be left choking on dust by a decent solidstate thats well worn in. Theres far more to amps than just valves. The biggest contributor to amp sound is often the most overlooked, the speaker.
