Hi folks,

first of all, here is my first post. Nice to meet you everyone. Dunno why but I have my strat plus 92 since... well 92 :) and never suscribe to this official forum. Pretty nice community here!

So, I am not a professional and I play only when I have time, that means 2-3 hours per day

Any way, my question is about the neck's polish. I know it was a "different" one than the standard at this time in the specs when I bought my strat, but not more. The bug was this polish was removing by itself on top of the frets and below too, all around the neck from the 22nd to the first one. Don't know why, I guess a bad luck. Since the warranty expired, well I guess after 15 years lol
I asked to my "luthier (how in english?)" to repair that. He did an awesome job! Keep even the old used color of the neck. Could be full new.

The point is the polish now is more sticky, for example when I double band the strings. Do you think I did a bad decision? Or could be only because it is new and not full dry. It makes only 1-2 weeks the polish is applied since he takes in all only 2 weeks for doing the job.

Definately, the "touch" is now full different. Good, but not sure if all good just for that.

Long post, I know :)

Thanks many times and have a great day all!
Ben.
Rock on!

Oil based plastic varnishes take a long time to dry, Even thought they are 'touch dry' they can reamain soft underneath for quite some time.

I'd leave it for a couple more weeks, before the strings leave marks in the fretboard!

Leave it out of the case too.

Give it many weeks to harden and calm down, if it is polyurethane (likely). If it is nitrocellulose then give it many months.

If after all that you still feel it is too sticky then give it a gentle polish with grade 0000 steel wool, available from any hardware store. Go really light and try not to touch the frets at all if you can, because the wire wool will abrade them and risk spoiling the crown on top of the fret. You want to just take the shine off the very surface of the lacquer and then stop. Gently, gently!

Cheers - C

Awesome!
Thx for these very useful tips Ceri and everyone.

I have to admit, the neck is already less sticky only in few days but still not as it was before. Guessing it's only about time but that grade 0000 steel wool trick might be very a good idea. Let's see in few weeks.

But my Strat is so nice now, I simply love it more day after day. I would like to post it in one of the "show your guit" threads but... lol... I didn't find the option to upload pics

Can't understand. I will see take a look again.

Fender forever!
Ben.

Hi again, Ben. We'd love to see pics of the guit. What most folks round here do is go to www.photobucket.com or a similar site where you can open a photo hosting account for free. When you do you'll see how to upload pics to the site and resize them if necessary: about 500 pixels wide is good for these pages.

Then when you have a picture or two in your album you'll see beneath them four lines of code. Just click on that bottom line to copy it, and paste that link into a post here at the Forum and presto, your picture will appear on the page here. Like this:

If you click the "quote" button on this post you'll see the line of code I just inserted and get what's going on...

By the way, that wire wool trick is often used by people on the back of their neck too, if they find that sticky. Just enough to get a nice matt finish. Some like it, some don't.

Cheers - C

Luthier is a perfectly good english word, but most people in the USA would say something like "guitar tech" or just "tech."

People who play acoustic guitars exclusively are more likely to know the word.

Hahaha - thank you!

In fact, that's claimed to be the first guitar Hendrix set fire to, at the Astoria in North London in 1967. It sold just the other day at auction for about half a million dollars. Pricey, but a lot less than expected.

...As a gentleman calling himself NapalmBBQ ought to know!

Hi Jack: I'm struggling to remember - I think the talk was of it selling for 0.5 to 1 million dollars. Which means of course they were hoping for the upper end of that range.

As it happens, at the time of the auction (4 September, I think) I ran a thread about it on this Forum and Stigall did one in the Fender Lounge. If you care to look them out either of those will give you the full story, web links, and the precise final price. If I recall correctly the one piece of information we didn't learn was the buyer - but maybe that's known as well.

Here's another link that I don't think was mentioned previously:

Thx tdanb2003 and noted soggycrow.

But wow, the first Hendrix's burned strat! Awesome.

I have a new account on Photobucket (nice site by the way). Going to show my stuff on a simple thread, nothing really special but not too bad, too

A beginning?
