background: I have a MIJ FR strat that I bought back in the early '90s used. I never really liked the FR but the rest of the guitar was perfect. Now it needs alot of work: refret, new pots etc. I thought about selling it but I just can't let go of it. The bridge posts need repair, and several parts on the FR unit are broken.

Since I don't like it or use it anyway, I have been trying to think of a way to put a hard tail bridge in or even a standard strat trem. It's either that or buy a whole new FR bridge and have the posts fixed.... and still have a FR bridge that I would wind up blocking anyway. Any one done this or have ideas? I think the challenge is the larger and slightly deeper recessed area than the stock trems. I have seen projects that involve the wooden block and sanding, but the finish is one reason I want to keep it (red foto flame).

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

As the body is routed for a floyd, you may want to find a replacement hardtail Fender body - alot easier and cheaper too.

I would not want to tackle that job. I'd take it to a licensed Fender repair shop and see if they could help and get a quote. Shop on line & see if replacing the body would be cheaper that having the shop do it. I'd take the lesser of 2 evils (repair vs replace).

You're keeping the guitar and renovating it up to scratch, because you are fond of it. Then I wouldn't mess with the woodwork, if I were you: if that is a "genuine" foto flame (strange combination of words...) then you will never ever be able to match it with the piece of wood you will need to fill the gap left by removing the Floyd. It will look awful. Actually, it's pretty challenging on almost any finish other than black...

I share your reservations about Floyds. Nevertheless, I'd suggest this is a case for replacing a worn old one with a new one of the same. Buy another guitar for your non-Floyd Rose excursions.

By the way, I don't have a lot of experience with Floyds so I'm on shaky territory here: but I have a notion they don't all necessarily have those pivot posts the same distance apart. So just measure the distance between the centers of your posts and make sure the replacement matches. That is a measurement that is usually given on websites selling trems, so it should be easy to get the right one.

Also, I do have experience with Fender-type two-point trems and one thing I know is that you don't want to replace the inset bushings the pivot posts screw into, because you may not get a tight fit into the timber. Just replace the posts themselves: replacement posts for Floyds are readily available so you should have no problems with threads that don't match.

BTW: be most interested to see pictures of your foto flame, if you felt like posting...

Good luck - C

If you do plan to replace the Floyd Rose. Visit Floyd Rose.com. Look around. Cool looking guitars there. Has a lot of info on Tremelos.

Ah, dumb of me: I forgot to mention this. If you just want to convert your Floyd Rose to a hardtail, Kahler sell a bridge that just screws on over the cavity left behind by a departed Floyd. Here's a page about it:

Cheers - C

That Kahler thing probably works fine, but it looks like the guitar still has a Floyd Rose on it (to my eyes at least).

disclaimer: I've never had a guitar with a Floyd Rose type trem.

I have. My ESP LTD has one and every guitar before it did. My HWY 1 was the first one I bought w/o one in a long time. First one to have that did not have tunning issues (w/o the Floyd).

The pic stinks but gives you an idea. I'll try to take a better one this weekend.
Ceri- You are very right. It has sentimental value and I love the body. The look and feel are great. I found that wammiworld site over the weekend. They also make an adapter plate that the Kahler bridge sits on that will in turn cover the floyd 'void'. I am going to look into this option-

http://www.wammiworld.com/PL-4%20and%205.html
It would probably look like the one at the top of the page, just the fixed bridge version. Not sure how it would look though. No luck googling pics of one with the plate on a strat.

If I replace the floyd bridge with a new floyd bridge I still wont like it... and life is too short for that. But I don't really want to drill into the body either..... but if I like it... its a vicious circle HAHA! I have had several shops low ball me on trade in simply because of the FR floating bridge. They can't move them.
