The top end Squiers can be pretty sweet, but having the "Fender" on the headstock ups the percieved value of the guitar. If you don't care about that, the pickups on the classic vibe Squiers are supposed to be killer .

help any?

Squier strats are not bad, but never better than a Fender. You'll get better finish, better hardware, the pickups are supossed to be similar (alnico III on both of them), but I think thet rests of the stuff will be better on the MIM Strat, and you're so lucky getting the sunburst finish... really nice. ... I would've buy the MIM to be my 1st electric.

The top line squiers are every bit as nice in MY opinion as a mexican strat. I know I'll likely get blasted for saying this, but the deluxe Squier blows the mexican out of the water in terms of playability. I eventually chose the Squier CV60s. And have not looked back.

Hope nobody blasts anybody for their opinions round here...

I've had a better look at the Squier Classic Vibes since 66musicmaster's earlier threads about prospective purchase.

The timbers were nice on the '50s and '60s Strats I saw, and the finishing was good. The fretting was exceptionally good on a guitar at that price point: the necks seem a serious bargain, to me.

I've also read an article in Guitarist where the pickups were praised - though the person doing the praising was Chris Gill, marketing manager of Squier! I didn't get to plug in (my objectives were elsewhere).

Couple of negatives: that pickguard on the '50s Strat was way too thick, noticeably so from a distance. It's a minor point but somehow bugged me. Quite unnecessary. Also, the timber on the '50s Tele is pine. Now I haven't played it, and if it sounds all right then who cares? But somehow... pine? Just ain't right - though I know that sentiment goes against everything I usually say to others regarding timber snobbery.

And one important point. The pivot screw spacing on the Strat bridge is narrower than on most six-screw bridges, which means it is not a straight swap if you want to mod it. That is a little trick you frequently find with Squiers; non-standard parts with things like bridges, pickguards and even neck-to-pocket fits. The idea being that you can't easily mod a Squier into a better spec guitar: you have to go and buy a higher level Fender instead.

One more point of interest. Previously mentioned Squier manager Chris Gill freely acknowledged that the inspiration for these guitars is the Squier Japanese Vintage (JV) models of the early '80s, which were in turn contemporary reproductions of period guitars. So we really are getting close to that long awaited phenomenon, the Reissue of a Reissue!

Anyway: so long as you were happy to keep it pretty much stock then the Squier CVs are a knockdown bargain, I'd say.

Cheers - C

I'd absolutely go with the MIM Standard. Great guitar for the money, it's an actual Fender, and a little more "solid" all the way around. You can take a MIM Strat, and play professionally, tour with it, and have it your entire life, your lifelong best friend - no kidding.

I wouldn't say the same for the Squier.

Sure, sure. And most of us have acoustics with pine (well, conifer) soundboards. And Danelectros are made out of partical board, or MDF, or papier mache or whatever the heck it is...

But I can't get over it: on a Tele or a Strat it is just not right! There's a reason Leo moved to alder and ash, after all.

I'm breaking all my own rules here. But I turn out to be an unreconstructed "timber-ist" after all!

Ah, no: you can't stop a thread once it's started. It's a runaway train from here on in. All you can do is hang on tight round the curves!

I wonder if one could convince Brad to delete an entire topic/posts?

He doesn't seem to do that very often.

I haven't seen any "trouble makers" at work lately ... perhaps Brad is deleting them before I can see them?
