hi mates,
i wanted a Squier Classic Vibe 50's, and asked some family in canada to buy and send it to me (to africa), once in the store, they called me and the store guy said that for the same price he can give me the original, i thought that "original" = " The fender classic series 50's " !! but i was wrong! now in the pictures they sent to me, i see that it's a Fender Standard Stratocaster (MIM).... :? !!
Can you guys tell me if it's a good thing or not !
after all it's a fender ?! i don't know, maybe the Classic vibe's Pickups are cool, but maybe the MIM is better made than the squier !
please guys tell me the good things and the bad in this situation !
thanks

I think there's actually a bit of overlap between the top Squiers and the MIM Fenders, but the Fender name will get you better resale value if that's important to you.

Summon the Squier haters in 5...4...3...2...1...

thank you mates,
but for the resale, on don't think i'll sell it one day , because it's my very first electric guitar (it means a lot  ), and every other guitar that i've played wasn't mine !
please tell me more about this overlap between the classic vibe 50s
and the standard MIM

the overlap is that top range squires are equal and sometimes better in quality than bottom range fenders.

I cant see it being the case between squire and mexican fender. I think its more probable between squire and korean fenders.
Squires are good guitars, fender are good guitars both companies also make bad guitars. Will the guitarshop let you play the mexican fender, if so try it out.

Agreed. And I think there is also huge overlap between MIM and MIA Fenders.

This is a really tricky one - I have the Classic Vibe 50's P bass, and I'm asounded by the quality - it's lovely.

I also have the classic 50's Fender strat, whitch is very nice.

I've played the std Fender, and much prefered my 50's.

The squier has loads of 50's charm, (I quite fancy one!) but won't ever be a Fender. The Fender will have better electrics, hardware etc...And it will say Fender on it!

Also My Fender strat never goes out of tune - even after lots of vibrato, will the Squier be so solid?

It's a real shame you can't try both!

Sorry to be so vague, only you can really decide, but hopefully I have offered some relevant info!

I vouch for the fact that the CV Squiers are beautifully made - mine is jsut flawless!

(And If it was me making the choice, I would go the the ultra cool CV 50's Tele!!!!)

I was in about the same situation a month or so ago. I liked the squiers for the price but my almost local music store gave me a good price ($400)on a sunburst MIM. My only requirement was that it had to be a sunburst with rosewood fb. So I was torn. I posted polls on here and asked several questions etc. The squier haters came out pretty strongly.

I was looking at the Std Squier strat with the big headstock (which I don;t like all that much). The name on the headstock didn't have to be "Fender". Just had to be Squier or fender. I also started looking at the CV60s. I played the vintage mod strat. I even played a deluxe, whcih was THE BEST of all the strats I played, MIM, classic 50s, squiers.

The top line squiers are every bit as nice in MY opinion as a mexican strat. I know I'll likely get blasted for saying this, but the deluxe Squier blows the mexican out of the water in terms of playability. I eventually chose the Squier CV60s. And have not looked back.

The body is three nice pieces with no veneers. The sunburst goes out to the edge on the back, not painted in the belly cut like on a MIM. I like that better. The neck is sweet. nice vintage tint to it. Sound is excellent. OF course, sound and tone are subjective, but it sounds great to me.. Alnico 5 pups.

The spec on the CV seemed nicer than the MIM, to me. All things considered.

As for staying in tune, I haven't touched the tuning in two weeks on mine. I haven't been using the trem though. But even when I use it, it stays in tune pretty dang well. Just minor touchups on occasion. As it gets "broken in" it gets better and better.

If you aren't worried about resale or the Fender on the headstock, I would whole-heartedly recommend the Squier over a Std MIM. And not even look back.

As Ian said, the squier will never be a Fender and the specs on it are quite nice, but not as high as the Fender 50s. but how much extra does all that cost? I bought my CV on the recommendations of the folks at another forum. I was not able to play one. Did play the MIM, but just wasn't worth the extra $100.

At this point, having played both, I would still pick the Squier. I can't see anything that would indicate any less quality construction on the CV than on the MIM.

Good luck deciding. Either way, you;ll have a nice guitar.

If you are not worried about re-sale get the Squire. I looked up the specs and it looks pretty good. I owned a Squire HM III I bought in 1987. HSS with Licensed Floyd Rose, nice April Wine red pant job, Fender Power Sound pups. Played it to the day it had an unfortunate and untimely death (broken neck). I liked it so much I replaced the neck with a Warmonth birds eye maple neck. Played it some more until I used it as part of a down payment for my ESP LTD (mistake). I have no beef with any guitar that sounds and plays good. If you have a chance go to a music store (not sure how possible that is for you) that carries Fender and Squire and play them both.

It has been my experience to play before you pay.

Hope your happy with the Fender Strat. My HWY 1 is a Brown Sunburst with Rosewood Fretboard SSS config. You can always change the pups if it does not sound good. With all the shipping it may need to be set-up. Fender has instructions on how to do it. Have fun with your guitar when you get it...let us know how you like it.

the standard strat is a great guitar, lets not forget its name standard has nothing to do with it being mundane. Its more the standard every other guitar should match.
