like between the tuners and the nut you can see the tip of the rod, but for some strats, there's nothing?

The "bullet".

Not all strats have this. It reminds me of that little pink thing on a dog hanging out.

My Deluxe you can't see anything at all. I bought a special tool from Stewmac for adjustments!

The 1974 Telecaster Deluxe (both the originals and the '72 reissue) have the bullet truss rods. These are found on the old big head Strat necks. the onld Tele Deluxes had a Strat headstock. And, yeah, I know what he is talking about.

The bullet truss rod adjuster was introduced so to eliminate the need to remove the neck to make minor adjustments, and to make inserting the hex wrench easier for the tech. I think it is a good feature, and who can argue with more chrome bling??

That chrome bling (bullet truss rod adjuster) looks more late '50s than '70s though ... check out all the chrome some of the US autos of that time had!

The bullett truss rod was a early 70's CBS innovation to move the adjustment from the base of the neck at the body in the early Leo Fender design. You had to take the neck off, or loosen the 4 screws at the neck plate to adjust the truss rod of the early Strats. I wouldn't advise adjusting the little pink thing that belongs to the dog....
