Hello,

I just received my new MIA Strat about a week ago.

I love it, but the set-up seems to be poor. Fret buzz and the pick-ups seem to high.

Is this normal? should I just take it in for a good set-up?

Thanks,

I'd take it back to the shop and complain a bit.
A new guitar should come setup and ready to go from the store.

Not so easily done, unfortunately.

Bought it online, I would have to ship it back.

Has anyone had this problem?

You can google or youtube guitar setups and learn to do it yourself, its fun and you will eventually need to learn it anyway .... :p

Just raising the action is not the right way to do a setup. You want to measure the string height from the bottom of the string to the top of the fret and when doing it have the guitar sideways like playing when measure is made. String height 4/64 Pickup height depends on the model. Also after you change the string height you have to do the intonation because you throw that out once you change the string height. There is just a lot more to a setup then raising strings. ( neck bow or relief, nut, check frets)

So based on the last post, I would assume it best to have a pro take care of it?

Like I said the guitar is brand new, Its seems like it should have been done better at the factory, but maybe because its a lefty, they dont give it as much attention....

However, my MIM strat seemed to be perfect when I bought it. I bought it new from Guitar Center. Maybe they did the set-up prior to me buying it???

Your guitar will have been given a good standard setup before leaving the factory. But depending how long it has been sitting on the shelf since, and how much temperature and humidity change it has experienced in that time, the setup can slip off, as wood expands and contracts.

So decent shops setup guitars again before offering them for sale - but less good shops might not. Or might not know how to... And if you bought it mail order then things might have moved a bit on that journey too.

Best thing, find a good tech and have him set it up again for you. If he's nice he might let you watch and show you some stuff, and it shouldn't cost too much.

And soon you'll want to learn setups yourself. It ain't too hard.

Cheers - C

My strat sounded perfect in the music store but when I got it home it had fret buzz. I brought it back to the store and they set it up again and told me the problem was the humidity level in my house was different from the store level. It seems that the stores are kept at a constant guitar friendly humidity level whereas the average house humidity varies. I have not had a problem since. Moral of the story, get it set up at your local fender authorized dealer.

I have three electrics. My Two Strats come to me (online purchase) just fine. My Tele had some serious bridge height adjustment problems. I didn't know what I was doing......but I pulled out the manual specs, got a feeler gauge, and had a go at it. It was much better than it was when I got it. I played it for about two years, then finally had it completely set up by a Fender Authorized Tech.
