Hi
I am just opening a fender hardtail Stratocaster. I was told it was from 1979. But inside the body I have found a second serialnumber which reads 02 02 81
It has the three bolt neck. The neck has the code S969943, this code is also on a sticker inside the neck pocket of the body, it reads fender serial number S969942.
But inside the body -under the pickups- I have found a second serialnumber which reads fender serial number 02 02 81, also on a little sticker.
So can anybody help me dating the body of the guitar?
I have photo's so let me know if you want some...
Thanks in advance

Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1978 - 1981

Which matches the 02/02/81

Do you mean the neck is from 1979
the body is from 1981?

In the older days, more so than now probably, parts were ramdonly grabbed out of assembly line bins or off of wooden pallet piles during assembly. It is understandable that a fairly close set of dates can exist in an "all original" guitar. Be concerned if the neck and body dates are, say, ten years apart, for instance, on a vintage instrument you plan to resell later as "original". Depending on age, it's fairly common a pickup or pot has needed to be replaced over the years. Working vintage parts command staggering prices on the after-market.
