Go for the one that you like. It's not always what we think is good. Personaly, I like SSS (STANDARD) because I'm a blues player, but thats just my opinion... 8)

He is asking a personal question, not like a poll man! But yeah, there is a lot of these questions around, correct.

I like SSS myself. I play a strat because of the single coil, gritty tone to it. If I want a humbucking tone, I have another guitar for that. My "metal" guitar with humbuckers, double locking, and a floating trems is more suited for harder, "Vai" style music to me anyway.

That's just me though. Taking a strat and putting humbuckers on it and a floating trem is like buying a 2-dr car, then cutting holes in the side to put more does on, and bigger seats. If that's my goal, I'll just buy a 4-dr in the first place.

I'd go with the HSS configuration especially if the Hummer is split so that you can run it as a single coil. That way you get all the options.

Play both and see what you like. Most metal and rock players like the crunch they get from Humbuckers Most blues players like the single coils. I play metal and been toying with blues; and I have a SSS Fender Stratocaster (no modifications) and a HH ESP LTD. I play the Fender Strat more, I like the sound. If you are going to switch pups, Dimarzio makes single coils and Humbuckers that a lot if bands are playing with. I do like the sound of the Fender Atomic Humbucker and if I was to mod my Fender, it would be with the Atomic Humbucker just to keep it with Fender parts. I am looking to buying a Fender HSS with the Floyd Rose Tremelo in the future and ditching the ESP LTD.

Standard sounds better imo. If you want a humbucking guitar get a Gibson or another guitar.

To answer your question...

If you are into anything other than Pantera-type metal, than the SSS will do great. If serious metal, though, then get the HSS ... or consider an Ibanez or Gibson.

SSS is just classic Strat. So pure. But I would be very open to having an HSH or HSS second Strat ... that'll probably be my git project in the near future.

As much as I like single coils, I have a single-sized humbucker on my main strat - a JB Jr, which I love. But just as a note, it's not 100% humbucker tone or 100% single tone (even when I split it).

The humbucker mode, thought my rectoverb, is solid, full, quiet, ballsy, etc - but a lot of that has the do with the rectifier.

The single tone, although more single-sounding, does not sound like my other strat with single coil strat pickups. It's close, but if I really want to pure strat tone, I'll grab the other strat.

There are times when I want that single bridge tone, and splitting the JB Jr is damn close, but I notice the difference. But, I expected that when I put it in. I wanted a versatile guitar that could get a full hi-gain sound, and a classic strat sounds - leaning more toward the strat tone - and I got that.

Like the saying goes though - things that try to do two different tasks, rarely do both perfectly. It's a little give and take.
