Well, in your situation I would go with the Les Paul. But this is something you really need to figure out for yourself.

If your into EVH why don't you just buy what he uses. Other than that, from your three choices for a rock 'n' roll guitar, any of those would work I guess. I would personally pick the Les Paul.

I can't see buying a humbucker strat at all. If you want a humbucker guitar, there's plenty of them out there. Why buy a great single coil guitar and make it sound like a Jackson or something?

Why not a Jackson or other super-Strat type guitar?

I don't believe there is any such thing as a "Best Guitar". There are personal preferences among people. I love my Fender and I love my Gibson's ... Would never part with any of them as long as I'm still breathing!

The American Deluxe is a very stable guitar for wammy bar use because of the LSR roller nut, locking tuners, and two point trem. It stays in tune after dive bombs.

The Diamond back hummie is not going to get EVH sound (tried it). I have the Atomic on my HSS, and though it is a very good pup, it is not enough umph for VH. I use a Duncan Distortion in my ESP for VH stuff and it nails it! It is the right tone and hase that 'drive' and sustain like he is known for.

I own the Gibsons too, but they are not even close in tone. Mahogany is not the thing to use for VH tone. I love my Gibbies for LZ, JP, AC/DC, and so much more. The HSS I have can work for that, but not nearly as well. Still, it would cover in a pinch.

Gotta go with the LP or the Explorer for that EVH sound.

CAFeathers earlier said to try what feels right and thats what you need to do, but I'd go for a LP in vintage Sunburst (sweet)

Really, it all depends on what your effects are to get a good rock and roll sound or heavy EVH style sound. You can probably get a great sound from any good guitar brand.

For my heavier sound, I use my Charvel (this guitar only has one humbucker pick-up located by the bridge) with distortion pedal and lots of reverb. This thing has a lot of meat to it.

As others have mentioned, make sure whatever you use, that it feels good to you when playing, then experiment with your effects to get the sound you are after.

A big part of Eddie Van Halens sound comes from tremelo usage(especially solos). He used a humbucker-equipped Strat-type for many VH albums. Maybe a nice HSS Strat, or a Kramer Baretta or Jackson Soloist??

Get the strat, but after you play it. Les pauls are too heavy and explorers aren't that comfortable. SG's are good because they're light, but the right way to do this is definately to try as many as you can, you'll find one that you'll love forever, trust me. Better than buying online, which I did, but I don't have much of a choice (small town, no cash).

I love strats and all, but I have to say that Explorers are my favorite.
