For a two-pivot model such as the American Series bridge, use your tremolo arm to pull the bridge back flush with the body and adjust the two pivot screws to the point where the tremolo plate sits entirely flush at the body (not lifted at the front or back of the plate).

What is the tremolo plate?

The bridge base plate, sometimes called the block.

So you lower the pivot screws so both the front and back of the bridge plate are resting on the body. Meaning no gap at all?

That is the recommendation of how to set up the bridge whether you wanna use it flush with the body or floating.. the two edges of the plate have to be set up so when you pull the tremolo bar when you are playing it sits nicely parallel to the body... if you have the pivot screws too screwed in the holes and you pull the tremolo back you can damage either the pivots or the plate or you are just not gonna be able to pull it back because it will be stopped by the pivot screws..... :P
