I leave mine on, but I've always wondered why people leave theirs off? Is it just for ease of string change/adjustment, or does it have an audible effect on the sound of the guitar?

The Strats that I leave them off are for ease of string changes only for me. There is no difference in sound that these ears can hear, but I'll bet that some will say that there is ?

Mine disappeared about 3 months after getting my guitar. I took mine off for two reasons: 1. the edges kept hanging up on my belt buckle, it's kinda funny though, after taking it off, you would think the edges of the spring cavity would hang up, but it doesn't. 2. Everybody else takes them off.

Mine doesn't even have the holes drilled for a cover.

I normally leave the plate on, but when I converted my "American Standard" to a "Big Apple", I couldn't see spending the extra cash on the matching plate so I left it "open". What had become somewhat of a "dust collector" is now one of my favorite players. I'll also point out that I opted for a standard three-way switch instead of the deluxe 5-way that the actual "Big Apples" and "Double-Fat's" have. More than enough tone here without it. I am thinking of adding a Fishman Power-Bridge to the set-up. Any thoughts?

It's for rapid change of a string that breaks during a performance. I have yet to break a string, and I always replace strings as a set. I'd be worried about snagging the tremolo springs on clothing or rocking the tremolo by holding the instrument closely, so I leave my backplates on.

But I suppose you could get a pretty wacky sound by dragging your pick over an exposed tremolo spring, lol.
