My friend is selling this strat and I can't figure out what it is??? I have a clone but want a real US made strat. The price seems reasonable, but I want to make sure this is the "real deal" before I drop some coin.

TIA ...

Have you got any more info like model year? Serial number? Have you taken the neck off?

If you want a real US made Strat, then don't buy that.

The neck didn't look original to the guitar IMHO.

He has no idea what it is. He picked it up at a yard sale. There is no serial number on the outside anywhere. That is what concerns me! So either someone replaced the neck plate or it is a fake. He is 7 hours away from me, so I'll probably have it shipped, but don't want to buy a fake and pay to have it shipped! He is not willing to disassemble it either because he is afraid he'll never get it back together again! LOL ...

Then don't buy it. If you can't confirm it's real, and he won't, just pass on it and get one you can confirm. There's no reason to be afraid to remove a neck on a strat. He's probably hiding something.

OK ... I'll fess-up ... it's only $200 with a case and new strings. He really has no clue and just picked it up because having a guitar is "cool".

I'm trying to convince him to remove the neck and pick guard and snap a few more pics for me.

It appears it has been modified regardless. The tuners look like Gotoh's and it has rolling string guides.

I have seen something like that in Korea. It' a knock-off. There is no registered trademark after Fender logo on headstock. The custom body decal is not like the others I've seen. I'd pass on the deal and buy from licensed dealer. You can try a pawn shop, again watch out for chop-jobs. Also no serial number is a dead givaway that it did not come from Fender. All Fenders have a serial number somewhere on it. Gotta watch out for people who piece crap together.

Dude, for that kinda money you can almost get a new MIM. Easily get a used MIM. A real deal Fender. You have no idea about the electronics in that. I'd really suggest passing on that and finding a good used MIM. They're everywhere. Check craigslist. Find something local you can actually play before you buy.

After re-looking at your pics, the plate on the back might be a orginal Fender product.

Somehow I have the feeling he's going to buy it no matter what we write.

It may be a decent player after all. He'll find out.

This site shows decals w/o a trademark ...

No ... not really. I already have a Kramer knock-off. I don't need another piece of junk (lol). But what if it is just a modified 50's strat? Then that $200 is a pretty sweet deal! :-P

... that's why I posted here! I'm looking for some help to ID it from people with Fender experience. No need to assume I'm wasting your time! Truth is I am doing my homework before spending my money!

You're right, he keeps defending it after getting the advice he asked for. Not much more we can do.
